So I purchased and installed Windows 8...

Suppose it just depends on the person and their preferences.

I've been enjoying the new interface. For me, it's quicker than using the start menu to navigate through my programs which is a bonus. Everything is easily accessible and where I want it to be. For a time I did consider installing Start8 for Windows® 8 - Bringing back the Windows Start menu but I didn't see the point after I got use to using Metro.

I'm still not sold on switching my phone over to a Win 8 phone because of the amount of apps I have with Android and that many of them are still not available via Windows store, but I will be getting a Surface Pro.

For me, the benefit of Windows 8 is all under the hood. Pretty much everything runs better on 8 than it did on previous versions. Better memory management, boots in no time at all, the task manager got a massive needed update, stability improvements... The list goes on and on.

Wonder how Android will fare if the newly announced Ubuntu phone OS takes off?

This could be the first offering which goes across a whole range of device with seamless ease (if you are to believe the marketing). Well here's Mr Ubuntu himself to explain it

While I don't particularly like the Unity interface on the desktop (that's just me) it could be a killer as a whole cross platform solution. Mark Shuttleworth has brought Linux to the masses, can he do it for the mobile space?

As for a crime, did they really force you to purchase a copy of Windows 8?
My comment was supposed to be sarcasm. :sigh:

As for taking three months to decide whether I should keep the OS or not...some things I like to thoroughly test before I make a decision.

Ugh, ANOTHER company entering the already saturated market? I hear Blackberry is going to come back as well.

Everything I'm reading about this Ubuntu phone seems to be negative. :\

I own a Blackberry Playbook. Blackberry is supposed to be updating the OS to the new version at the end of January. I'll post a review after I've taken it for a spin. Blackberry is hoping that version 10 will lift them out of the ditch. I like Blackberry, so I'll be crossing my fingers.

Yeah, as I said, if the end product is 50% as good as the marketing blurb then they could be a force in the mobile market. I was of the opinion (like many were) that there are already too many in the game and to come in so late was plain stupid but, the mobile space is just creating one revolution after another so when is too late?

Anyone remember Nokia? Whist still around, they have totally lost their dominance and now relegated to a minor player and would have probably disappeared had it not been for Microsofts help. This is a very volatile marketplace and those that innovate and market well will succeed, the rest will slowly, or quickly, make their way into the history pages - I fear Blackberry will slowly but surely make their journey into those pages.

At the moment there is always something new around the corner that may take the dominant role in the mobile space. Microsofts offerings are at best bland, Apple appears to be faltering and Android seems to be the new king but how will this market look in 5 years? Actually, I don't think anyone can say for sure how it will look this time next year...

You sounded quite frustrated actually :)

Good for you, glad you actually criticise from experience rather than what you hear others say. I still have a copy of Windows 8 which I boot into every so often for trying stuff and just purchased another copy yesterday to upgrade one of my daughters laptops - she likes the latest and greatest, my other daughter is happy with Windows 7 or Linux on her laptop. Just about to upgrade the wifes computer and offered her the choice of Win 8 or keeping Debian Linux which she currently has installed, her answer was "I don't want Windows 8 as it's too slow" :)

However, I may just give her a choice by dual booting her upgraded machine with Win 8 just so she has the choice if she decides otherwise in the future.

It's a shame about Windows 8 as they have made it perform better but have really spoiled it by giving it a schizophrenic personality.

Perhaps Windows Blue will make things better, perhaps it might not...

Perhaps it should be called Windows BSOD :)

I'm actually starting to look through upcoming mobile phones as it's almost time for me to upgrade. My poor Thunderbolt feels so sluggish now even using something like Amazon App Store.

I'm pretty certain I'm sticking with Android because of the app market being much better than the competition, but not sure what will be coming out around March yet. Word is a new Samsung Galaxy S4 will be a good option to consider. I'm just not looking forward to the price tag since I have to pay for the whole phone to keep my unlimited data.

I haven't had any such problems with W7 and have been using it, the 64-bit version, on 3 different laptops, still using on 2 (my brother now uses the third):
Some Windows 7 users, including myself, were having problems with Windows 7 freezing. Without warning everything on the screen would freeze. Nothing other than a cold restart would help. In my case it happened at least twice a day.
