It's Latin. Aquinas is doing the same in his translation for which Luther was condemned, that is, Sola fide. According to the papacy, one is a heretic, and one is a doctor of the church. (As indicated by the quote from a Pope quoting another Pope.)

He was a monk, but posthumously he has been declared a saint and a Doctor of the Church, which is a pretty high honor.

All of the giants of the faith have failings. We should rejoice not so much in the person, but in the light that they bring.
