we found out last Sunday that we are going to be learning the Divine Service, Setting IV! in the 3 years that i've been attending this church, the only Divine Services we've done is Setting I and Setting III (i'm not sure why this is??) - so it's very exciting to find out we'll be learning a new one! hopefully this means we'll be learning the other Settings as well!!

(this probably seems pretty silly to be excited about, but i think it's pretty neat!)

I once suggested to our pastor that since we have five different settings in the LSB there are plenty of settings to rotate through every month so really there is no need to have Liturgy-Lite quasi-contemporary services every first, third and fifth Sundays.

I'm still waiting.

Settings I and III are the most commonly used settings in the LCMS. Setting I was found in the blue Lutheran Worship hymnal as "Divine Service II First setting" and is actually based upon an ancient liturgy of the Church. Setting III is found in the old red The Lutheran Hymnal and is more commonly referred to as "page 15". Setting IV is an adaptation of a Divine Service order was first published in Hymnal Supplement 98 and is relatively new.

...and as I recall from the LSB introduction Seminar; IV is an adaptation of the Mass approved (or compiled) by the first Lutheran Bishop of Sweden; but with more modern music.

It is nice; but I still like III the best;).

The music of the Alleluia is very pretty, but sounds suspiciously like and adaptation of Salve Regina; not that there is anything wrong with that:):

In my congregation we are teaching the members LSB Setting I. This is an old TLH congregation and they only know setting III. We are currently teaching the choir members the sung parts of the service. They tend to grumble on how "difficult" some of the parts are. But what they don't realize is that Setting III is actually the most "difficult" of the settings to learn. They're just typical Lutherans, afraid of change.

This may be a stupid question, and considering the author, it probably is... but how do you teach someone a new Divine Setting? Do you do it in a separate class, or do you do it during the service and repeat it every week or so, until the congregation gets it?

It's a bit of a combination of both. We are teaching the choir members the sung parts of the liturgy setting. When they are somewhat comfortable with it, we then use it in the service with the choir members helping to lead the congregation in learning and singing it. It will take a few times until the congregation catches on.

Well...I don't think there is a setting we haven't used :) We get a heads up when the setting is going to change.

In my former congregation we used Settings I, III, and IV and rotated them through the month. I personally don't care for setting II.
