  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Would you be mad if I stated 'when I taught' and answered a question for k-5 teachers?

I have no degree, and the last 'class' I taught was my DS. But I did teach in a private school in PA before getting married (wow that was a long time ago!). Would my lack of degree anger you? Or cause you to state as a unliscensed teacher (which BTW I am liscensed to teach in NC, but that was just a test) shouldn't answer?

I am so annoyed and upset at another board where one poster who seems to have a personal vendetta against me, first because I shouldn't teach my children since I don't have a degree, and second because I shouldn't answer posts about k-5 since I don't have a degree. Even though several people replyed long before I saw the post that they appriciated my advice (and boy does that warm the heart) I still am left feeling so ..........hurt, how silly is that, I am hurt by an annonomous poster, really shouldn't I just grow up? Maybe I can blame it on pregnacy hormones?

Yeah, blame it on the hormones. Sounds good to me;).

It bothers me the way some teachers think they are SOOOO superior because they have a certificate or something and the rest of us are peons and have no right to even attempt to teach the three R's. I, for one, am less impressed by degrees and titles and names of schools, and more impressed by what a person actually KNOWS and uses and learns.

I think teaching is a God given gift - degree or not. I worked at a school where one of the teachers that had been teaching for eons was someone that I would never let teach my child. On the other hand, we had a man that did a long term sub for someine one maternity and he was awesome. He wasn't even considering teaching as a profession until then. The next year he was a third grade teacher at the school while working on his emergency certification. Word traveled about how good he was and the next year parents were lined up to have their kids in his class.

Don't let those posters bother you. People get way to touchy on these boards sometimes.

For what it's worth Princess, I have a degree in education, but I am not certified to teach because I let my test time lapse due to having children. I did teach in a private school in NY for 3 years and I teach my children at home. I know of several people who were in school with me who failed the teaching tests multiple times (finally passed) and they have no business in the school districts. I also know several people who have no teaching degree who teach in private schools or who teach their own children who would be a blessing to any school district because of how good they are at teaching. I think whatever happened in the other post is based on a snobbish attitude that builds amongst teachers with certification. Brush it off and if the poster continues that behavior, tell them to suck it up. :)

Like an old friend of mine said, "Dummies go to college too." Just because you don't have a college degree doesn't mean you aren't qualified to teach children. Anyone who would say something like that is either ignorant or a great part of their self esteem is in their education so much it can't help but ooze out.

People who base their identities on their degrees or other academic achievement (instead of Jesus) are usually the ones most crotchety about others who don't have a degree in the discussion in question. Their already fragile identities would break if an 'undegreed' person were to be correct in an opinion, fact, or figure, or appeared 'smarter'.

To me a degree is a means to an end. If it's not, than obtaining it for the sole purpose of "having it" is pretty silly and a waste of 4+ years.

But that's just my opinion.
