When global warming failed to come about, whispers of the ice storms from the North reached few ears, then to be dismissed or shrugged off. But in 2006, the Global chill set in. Cooler or moderate continants like Europe, North America and parts of Asia were overwhelmed, and South America became cool to the extent where snow sometimes fell in the Sahara desert. Mid-africa and Australia became islands of paradise, with warm temperatures. A third of the world's population died out from various maladies, and three-fourths of the remaining population moved south of the former Equator. The world's axis had tilted further to the side. Most of the people remaining North of the Equator lived in Tokyo or Mexico City. North America was virtually deserted, and Europe Unliveable. A fourth of the year is total night, a fourth total day. And the times between are a mixture of cool twilight and fiery sunset.
The only people who lived there were the ones unlucky enough to be on the wrong side of the law or those who had adapted to the conditions. A few pioneers were left struggling to find a foothold in the icy landscape, lest their southern kindred come eventually to the same fate.
The night was chill, forgidding, unforgiving. To take one step from the shelter of the ledge was an effort, to take twenty was to die. Snow blasted against the hastily erected blocks of ice, and the girl plodded on, weary and cold, her fingers and toes numb. Three walls she had built, from blocks of packed snow and ice that she had cut from the ground with her shovel. Quickly, she brought the top blocks closer together and then laid a block on top, leaving a narrow crack to get in. Ducking outside, she unhooked her dog team from the sledge and led them to the leeward side of the ledge. No need to worry about them wandering off. Once inside her makeshift igloo, she pushed snow into the cracks and covered the 'door' with a stiff deerhide and curled up, with hardly enough room to do so. Black dreams and black night smothered her.
