A $250 million dollar movie only raked in $87 million internationally. You'd think they would have learned their lesson after the failed Star Wars: The Acolyte series. But alas, you go woke, you go broke. Is this yet another message to progressives that people are not really buying what they are selling? In this case, literally.

“The weekend was even worse for other movies.”

Disney isn't going to go broke with Snow White. It will at least triple the $250 million it cost to produce it within a year.

American movies generally are more and more boring and without any real creativity or originality. Tons of effects cannot balance the still same plot patterns, same speech patterns, silly joking, forced diversity etc.

I rather watch French, Scandinavian, Italian, Japanese, Korean... production, because it is simply something culturally fresh to me.

Yeah, since when did recovering a third of your budget opening weekend constitute "going broke"? Also:

That’s even less than Tim Burton’s Dumbo, which came in at $45 million in 2019.

TIL Tim Burton did a Dumbo movie. Now I kinda want to see it regardless of the poor reviews.

I personally didn't care for it, but I'm not super keen on the live-action remakes of animated films to begin with (the The Lion King made the least sense because it still wasn't even "live-action" since it was almost 100% CGI), but I don't begrudge Disney for it really. Constant remakes and reboots in film generally are kind of annoying to me. How many versions of DC characters, Batman and The Joker in particular, are there now (tbf I know that happens in comics also, but I was never a comics lover either, so)? I'd just rather see more originals and adaptations.

It seems like the controversy surrounding this movie has completely overshadowed the movie itself. I want to start by acknowledging that both sides of this debate have valid reasons for feeling the way they do. There’s frustration over how beloved stories are being reimagined, and also a desire for broader representation in media, and both perspectives deserve a respectful hearing.

That said, as Christians, we need to approach these kinds of cultural discussions with Godly love, humility, and understanding, especially toward one another. I’m not saying you're doing this in your post, but I’ve seen plenty of folks fall into the trap of slinging hateful rhetoric over what amounts to a Disney movie. Can you imagine standing before God, the books of your deeds are opened, and He says: “So... it says here you called your brother a [bleep] [bleep] [bleep]... over Snow White.”

Regarding the business side of it, I’m sure Disney isn’t thrilled with the initial box office results, but they’ll likely recoup their investment over time through streaming, licensing, and merchandising. That’s just how the industry works now.

All the more reason for us as believers to not let this become a source of division. The world is already quick to turn disagreement into hostility. Let’s be the ones who show what it means to disagree with grace and walk in unity, even when our opinions differ.

Now that I have a 4yo daughter who's into anything Disney, I've been finding that I like the idea of live-action remakes a lot less than I like the actual experience. The Beauty and the Beast and Little Mermaid remakes stand up perfectly fine on their own. The Maleficent movies aren't remakes per se, but they're decent enough and the story is more interesting than the original. The kid went with grandma to see Snow White last week and liked it. I didn't go, but the original sucks, so it's hard to imagine the new one being any worse.

I have kind of the same opinion of the comic book thing - I like the idea less than I like the reality. This current iteration of the Batman universe, for example, is really solid. I have a hard time caring about most other cinematic universes (e.g. Star Wars, Marvel), but this one is landing for me. Even Joker: Foile a Deux, which everybody else hated, I thought was at least an interesting take on both the story and the jukebox musical genre.

You and I are on the same page. The Batman iteration is definitely my favorite because it presents him as more of the detective batman as he was originally conceived and shows his fallibility. The one scene in particular where the Penguin corrects him about the proper grammatical way to say a Spanish phrase which leads him to solving the riddle was great.

Have you seen the Penguin show yet?

To be fair, this film was already in production way before the Republicans took back the vote.

80.3% are one star reviews. The same has happened with other movies and series that took the woke route.
If you click through those reviews, you can see that at least half of them are from people who can seemingly write decent reviews (i.e. multiple paragraphs, good sentence structure, logical flow, broader-than-average vocabulary, etc), but have not reviewed anything other than Snow White. Those aren't genuine reviews; those are review-bombers using ChatGPT.

They also have broadly the same structure and make the same complaints.

That doenst help determine if this movie is woke or just bad, or both.

Just look at Rings Of Power for instance. People hated the woke "DEI" elven and other 'races' situation and slagged it just for that. But even if the elves were racially pure and snow white (so to speak), the writing and storytelling was still just abysmal. They could have un-woken every aspect of it and it still would be garbage. Maybe same with Snow White?

Yes, Rings is one example of massive one star reviews given for it being taken the woke route. The written reviews of Snow White on IMDb might shed more light on what's disliked about it. Personally I don't really care about the woke aspect along those lines in movies. At least they didn't have a transman playing Snow White and the Dwarfs weren't multigender and married to each other (or so I presume).
