  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I was just thinking recently about wether christians who smoke go to hell? I mean think about it, in reality its slow suicide, and sometimes ur lack of will power because of the addiction u are harming others at the same time.............apprently people go to hell for less so will smokers go to hell?
(I haven't started debating about WHY people smoke but if u want to add this into this topic u may, but don't use anythign from this first post because I am not addressing it and my words in the area may not be the best for it)

Morally speaking, smoking is not a mortal sin. It can be compared morally to acts such as eating fatty foods. Additionally, you must not negate that a person's intent when smoking is not necessarily to harm themselves (a fundamental component of any sin is intent).

However, it is worth saying that recognition of the fact that our bodies are the temple of our Lord who dwells within us, is perhaps the holiest of motives to stop smoking and perhaps live a healthier lifestyle. Just the apostle Paul wrote to the church in Corinth,
"19 Or know you not that your members are the temple of the Holy Ghost, who is in you, whom you have from God: and you are not your own?
20 For you are bought with a great price. Glorify and bear God in your body."

I have to ask you, as a wiccan, what concern do you have with Christian morality? It's interesting for me to read a post by a wiccan which is more morally restrictive than most Christian moral perspectives... What do the wiccan gods have to say on this issue of smoking and eating of fatty foods? Do they dislike it? If so, why? What about abortion, euthanasia, and cloning? What say the gods?

Isn't being Wiccan suicide? Are you saying that you are not a sinner

We all are sinners and fall short of the glory of God.

Can you say that you have no addictions? Everyone is addicted to something. In fact people become addicted to many things in their lives. They overcome one and sometimes get another. Its hard especially in the world today. Do you not buy jewelry, make up, clothes. Do you not drive a vehicle (which you could get killed in)? I mean you can not say that if you were to get into any form of trasportation that with out a resonable doubt you will definately not get killed.

I am not trying to come off as mean, please do not take it that way, Im just trying to make a point and answer your question in my opinion.

Although I'm not a Christian, I do think that a sin is only a sin if the person commiting the sinful act knows that it is sinful and has the intention of sinning. So I don't think that smoking could be considered sinful, unless the smoker has the intention of giving him or herself lung cancer.

There are lots of things that humans do that are less than beneficial to the body. As A_B_liever pointed out, fatty foods could have the same effect. How about not exercising? If you don't exercise regularly you will (usually) have a shorter life than people who do. Smoking as suicide is not a very strong argument. If you want to argue about Christian beliefs regarding suicide or sin, that's fine - but a silly argument like this? Come on....

Smoking isn't suicide. People don't generally smoke with full intentions of killing themselves, they do it for pleasure knowing it may kill them.

The same logic behind smoking being suicide could just as easilly be used to say rock climbing, white-water rafting, or even flying is suicide.

Hmmm, I've tried flying, sky-diving, & white-water rafting. I haven't done rock climbing yet - I guess I'm not totally suicidal. ;)

Seriously, though, DXRocker73 has a point - and you could add any thrill seeking sport/activity to the list.

Ok so asking questions is wrong, here whoops sorry. Yet peopel debat things like abortion why not smoking and addiction? The main question was doign things that u KNOW is really bad for ur health a sin or not? seeign people are getting cut with this top I'll just leave it then.
Hey, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to imply that your question was unwelcomed. I do however, wonder what Wicca teaches about these matters (smoking and eating fatty food) or even morality in general. Do the gods/goddesses dislike it?

It teaches u to keep ur body clean and cleansed and that ur body works better when u are treating it right. The gods I THINK peopel differ with different gods don't really interfer because ur own karma will get to u first. I know where I stand on it and I never smoke, one because I knwo with my health it will be a quick death and too never liked the concept. I try and abstain form fatty foods btu when I do eat them I try and combat the side affects, I try and live my life as healthy as possible, the gods I go with are to put it simply (cause I'm too tired to write) are elemental, more to do with the earth and nature then with individual person, thats what karma is for. I'll elaborate more when I am more awake and coherant.

I don't think that smoking is inherently evil, and I think that, if we're going to make any judgement at all, we must know what kind of smoking we're talking about. Consider:
I smoke a pipe. It's great fun to sit around with my friends smoking pipes, and I consulted a doctor asking how often I can puff one of them without really risking health problems. He said smoking about two bowls per week would be fine, so that's generally my limit. Is this immoral?

I smoked a cigar when my parents recently arrived from China with my newly adopted sister. It was tasty and helped make the occasion even more special. Was that immoral?

Oh puh-leeze - NO - if so, then I'm going to hell. ^_^ Going to quit smoking one of these days. Just a bad habit I picked up when I was a teen b/c I thought it was cool - now I'm addicted. btw, I wouldn't want to forget to say this is just my opinion;) I see you've gotten a lot of flack for asking this question as well. You asked a question b/c you didn't know the answer. You were truly curious and there is nothing wrong with that. Don't let others make you feel like an idiot b/c you didn't know something. I'm sure there are a lot of people on here who would like to know other things as well but just don't have the nerve to post it..........

In my household smoking is done in the garage or outside. We don't smoke indoors.
I think it is alright, I don't feel too guilty about an occasional smoke.

No, smoking is worse than just suicide. It is also murder. When you smoke around other people (especially non-smokers), you are actively making a statement that you don't care about the other person's health. Remember, it's not just *your* health that you're affecting when you light up around people (so yeah, this means I don't care if you smoke privately or with your friends).

As a sign I once saw said.
Guy: Mind if I smoke?
Girl: Care if I die?

Its my personal opinion that the air quality in the streets of any big city is more harmful to the lungs than second-hand smoke.

Most smokers want to quit but cannot.

A non smoker cannot understand what it is like to be addicted to nicotine.

I think in evaluating the morality of smoking, you must take into account the intent - nobody intends to get addicted. And once they are it is SO hard to quit.

Lol...me too. I smoke. I've tried to quit a hundred times, mainly to "whitewash my tomb" on the outside, so I would appear a proper Christian. Then I realized I've never felt convicted of God about smoking. He's too busy working on selfishness, pride, and all the other various, sundry sins of mine. I know it's bad for my health. I want to stop, but right now I need Him to make me stop being mean. Lol!! Priorities people, God has them too!!!^_^
