Interesting that no-one who voted "yes" has had the bottle to comment!

I accidentally voted "yes" ...after reading the question properly I realised I'd voted for the wrong thing  So ignoring me and my click-happy finger  there's one yes...though maybe they are also a bit too quick at the clicking :D

What kind of crazy person would what it banned of the street? I thought the point of the banned was to protect people who in work places such as pubs that are exposed to it all day most days of the week.

:D

You will find that there are people who want to ban smoking from everywhere, including being on the street. Some would say they inhale enough smoke from other people when they walk past, or if groups are stood together outside smoking , which is not good enough for them.

The ban that your all talking about, yeah is about protecting people who work behind the bar, or in pubs, but i did think I read somewhere that a chain of family pubs have decided NOT to enforce a full smoking ban, as their sales were dramtically decreased in the test pubs they tried it in.

Incidentally, all of you going down the hard YES IT SHOULD BE BANNED FROM EVERYWHERE line, have you ever smoked? do you smoke?

I think some of these posts are coming across quite harsh!!

Smoking or not smoking in public placs is not the issue~of course most Christians think you should not smoke period, but that is because we have found Christ who fills the void that people think smoking will fill. People get into smoking because of whatever reason~they basically are passive toward it and fall for it. People continue smoking because they are "stressed" or "upset", let alone the addiction aspect. Basically, smoking is another God. In the bible the Lord makes it clear to "not let anything rule in our lives", that includes smoking.

Anyways, I don't really care if people wanna smoke in public, because I know the reason is that they don't know Christ, so I get the privalege to share Him with them :preach:

fair comment, fair play so to speak.

I just think its very easy for non smokers to run after a ban, when they have never smoked . I think its an iffy area, and like I said, I dont know what I think really. I am not defending smoking, even though I am come across that way.
It is an awful habit, one that I am slowly kicking, but it isnt easy. Two months I have not smoked for now, and I dont want to start again, but I just am not sure that I think banning smoking totally in places is the right thing.

Anyway, like i said, i dont really know, so hey lol ...

I don't understand why you think it should be banned on the street. Does you honestly think it is more of a risk then pollution from cars?

OK here are some reasons to support a ban on smoking:

A five-year-old boy has lungs like those of a pensioner because of exposure to his mother's 20-a-day cigarette habit.

Sol Rickman underwent surgery after developing breathing difficulties and doctors were horrified at what they found.
They told his 23-year-old mother Kelly her youngster's lungs looked like those of a lifelong smoker.

Passive smoking kills around 5,000 Britons a year
One bartender, waitress or club worker dies in the UK every week because of breathing in second-hand cigarette smoke, new research has revealed.
Passive smoking is estimated to cause at least 49 deaths a year among those working in the hospitality industry, and a further 700 people due to environmental smoke in the workplace generally.
And almost 4,000 people die due to being exposed to tobacco smoke in their own homes each year, according to the new research.
at least 3,600 people under 65 died each year from lung cancer, heart disease and stroke caused by passive smoking at home.

Passive smoking causes breast cancer, particularly in younger women, according to a new report.

The study is one of the first to suggest that smoke is a cause of the disease, which affects one in nine women.
It found that women exposed to second-hand smoke have up to a 90 per cent greater risk of developing breast cancer.

PASSIVE smoking dramatically increases the chances of developing asthma, according to research.
Scientists say people whose partner smokes are almost five times more likely to develop the condition.

Breathing smoke from other people's cigarettes dramatically increases the chances of having a stroke, according to research. Non-smokers are up to 82 per cent more at risk if they live or work with a smoker

All of these are from recent articles and research

I think it's about time tobacco was made illegal anyway!!! (I like to be provocative!)

I used to smoke - I smoked from 15 till I was 59! I was freed one Friday whilst queuing up for my packet of cigs in the supermarket. There was quite a queue as folk were getting lottery tickets - there was a big roll-over that week - and I found myself suddenly thinking "How sad are we all queuing up here for our 'fix'! I don't need this! I'm not going to spend any more money on cigarettes!" And I walked away and never bought another cigarette since! That was in March 2000. I believe it was by the grace of God that I did this as I had absolutely no problems thereafter. But I didn't actually decide to give up smoking - I decided to give up buying them! It was easy for me as I only ever smoked at home and I live on my own so there was no temptation as such.

Now I loath the smell of other people's smoke. When I go to work in the hospital, the entrance I use is adjacent to the maternity unit and all the young mums to be gather outside the door for their tabs and it's horrid having to push through the smoke cloud to get into the building. I want to say to them "Haven't you any idea what that cigarette is doing to your baby?"

(sorry for this long post but I'm impassioned!!!!!!!!!)

Interesting that no-one who voted "yes" has had the bottle to comment! Is that because, as an argument, it is completely indefensible? There can be no possible excuse for forcing others to be poisoned as an exercise in "freedom of expression".

By that argument I vote we ban all cars and lorries, especially those ugly, murderous gas guzzlers known as SUVs. I am fed up with breathing in filthy exhaust fumes whenever I go into the city and having that odious metallic taste in my mouth. The inhalation of noxious fumes from vehicles is just as injurious to health as the smoke from cigarettes.

It reminds me of reading a quote by Liam Neeson who mentioned that when he was in Los Angeles people expressed horror that he was "smoking" yet at the same time seemed quite content to breath in the filthy yellow smog that they deemed passed for "air" and which was/is created by their passion for the "infernal" combustion engine.

I think smoking has been proved to be such a danger to health that smoking should be completely banned in ALL public places. I also think that people should not be permitted to smoke in front of children in the home, as this increases the asthma risk. We have never allowed folk to smoke in our home.

I was extremely angry this evening to see a mother in the pub, with her newborn baby, puffing away as she gave the child a bottle.   I hope that in the future, that sort of behaviour is made illegal. No one has any excuse for not knowing the risks to their children if they smoke in front of them!

Your argument puts me in mind of good ol' Prince Philip claiming that cricket bats should be banned cos they can be used to kill people just like guns.

Fatuous. Traffic fumes are a bi-product of the internal combustion engine, whose primary purpose is transportation! And there is some considerable effort to reduce the impact of said fumes on individuals & the planet (unleaded fuel, catalytic convertors, LPG, hybrid engines etc).

Cigarettes only purpose is to produce smoke, delivering highly addictive drugs and noxious chemicals into the lungs of the smoker, and the atmosphere around them.

Hi Starr!

Sorry if my comments seem harsh to you.

No, I have never smoked, but throughout my childhood my mother & her friends smoked, and so I was constantly affected by it, and I absolutely hate it. It hurts my eyes, my throat, my lungs. Makes me feel suffocated & panicky, not to mention making me stink.

And I do find it hard to be sympathetic towards smokers. No-one can claim to be ignorant about the facts of smoking, and it's not exactly an instantly pleasurable experience to force smoke into your lungs. It takes repetition and a level of commitment to become a smoker. I kind of get the whole addiction thing (sort of), but since people need to really work at becoming addicted to something they know causes lung & heart disease; myriad cancers; bad skin, hair, teeth, breath; impotence & is hugely anti-social, I am at a loss when it comes to sympathy. I am sorry, I just find it unfathomable! Perhaps I need to let God work that one out in me, cos I know I do sound very judgemental, but I honestly don't understand at all!

I hope you're not too sore with me, cos, honestly, I hate the smoke, not the smoker! ;) :p

Because the street is as much a public place as a pub/club/workplace etc. I can choose not to go into a pub or club and avoid the smoke - however i cannot choose not to go onto the streets because of the smoke otherwise i would never be able to leave my house (well obviously i can choose not to go out but i think you know what i mean)

I also do think that more needs to be done to make sure that car fumes are less harmful
