• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

I have been a smoker for half my life and not something I am proud of, when ever I try to give up smokeing there is always something that will happen that will make me go and start agian.

I wont go in to any personal details, but there is so many things that I have to deal with in daily life if I didnt have some release I would go crazy, this seems to be the biggest problem and acts as a feeder to take down any will power you have.

I dont give any credit to these patches that help you stop I for one think they dont work, cause at the end of the day the only thing that will make you stop is you and your will power alone.

Least we not forget that nicoten is a powerfull drug and very addictive more so than heroin I have been told. In knowing this I cant understand why it is still legal to sell them ?

I dont know how these big companies that sell and promote smokeing can sleep at night, they are no more than petty drug dealers causeing human misery to millions.
If they really wanted to help smokers stop they would stop makeing there product so atictive and research on how to make there product better and safer, I think this can be done, but why would they want to do that then they would go out of bussiness.

It's a sad fact that if tobacco was outlawed ALOT of people would be out of work. It's a shame that these companies are so evil and it's cool that lately their secrets have been brought into light. I really appreciate the non-smoking ads, some of them are pretty cool and I think they are starting to plant seeds in peoples minds.

I feel for you in the effort to quit smoking, and it seems so impossible. But it is possible, and many people have succeeded. I read somewhere that if you can get through 15 minutes of craving, that you can quit smoking, because that is how long the cravings last. You should not have cigarettes available to you when you try to quit. You should try to have something else to concentrate on, such as a hobby, or work, or whatever you are interested in.

I don't know Katzen,my husband can quit for a month and slip back. They say nicotine and heroin addiction are closely related in craving and such.He does fine but slips, and when he does..its more cigarettes at one sitting.I am worried because I don't see him in my future.Smoking ads don't effect smokers.I don't think anything but prayer will work but he isn't serious enough to pray yet.I hate this...I do.How many of you get the shakes and migraine from withdrawl?

If you will let me I will gladly pray for you Dr Majestic.. I would also be happy to do so for your husband too Beach Blonde. I know how hard it is to stop smoking.. My Dad has just reached 50 and he'd been smoking since he was 12.. That's a long long time and he managed to stop. He had already had a heart attack about 7 or 8 years previous and he decided to stop then.. But gave up quitting very quickly. Finally at 50 he's stopped and has been clean now for over 6 months. He's doing really well and although he isn't a Christian and doesn't know I pray for him, I still do. I don't want to lose my Dad and I'm sure your family don't want to lose you Dr Majestic. You have to keep trying and with God on your side He'll make it much easier!!
May God bless you with the ability to quit,
Take care
- Chris

I stopped smoking more than a year ago together with my wife. We took it slowly -- at first we cut down to about 20 a day and after that we cut down one a day untill we were free. Oh we also 'banned' ourselves to smoking only outside this helped as well as we had to get up/stop our activity all the time to have a smoke.
I still regularly feel like a smoke -- which is the problem with nicotine addiction - so having build this strong will power helped us to continue - that is why I think the one a day cut served us so well, it also increased our will power and didn't give us nasty withdrawal effects.

Smokeing like any other drug addiction has many underlieing factors, if your already stressed out liveing a not so good life in poor health with lack of income then it is much harder to stop when other things have to be addressed, there is a link thats why it makes it so much harder for a lot of folk.

That statement above is exactly what satan uses to the hilt to keep you from quitting. And let me tell you something (rather bluntly if I may) it is nothing but excuses. I knew and used every single one of them.

The week I finally just decided to quit you can not even imagine the things that happened to me. I won't even go into detail but let me tell you the things that transpired the first week I quit were literally unbelievable. I'm telling you . . .satan will stop at NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING to keep you in bondage to those blasted, disgusting, cigarettes.

I haven't quite had a week like that since, I just pushed onward with it. And actually stood in the middle of my living room after the third or fourth or fifth or who knows how manyth trauma hit and screamed at the top of my lungs, "GET THEE BEHIND ME SATAN I AM NOT GOING TO START SMOKING AGAIN SO GET THE **** OUTTA HERE AND DON'T EVER COME BACK BECAUSE I'M DONE WITH THEM AND YOU!!!

That was 6 mos. ago and I'm still going good and strong. I will not lie to you and say it was easy . . .it WASN'T. But my friend Jesus is soooooooo worth it. As the Nike commercials would say, "just do it!!!" and forget about the excuse because life will ALWAYS throw you a curve or two or three or ??? you get my point -- it's endless.

I pray you think on these things and everything else that is written and that you quit in Jesus Name, Amen!

And so have you quit? I am now over 2 years down and I must say it is an awesome feeling. I went to my brothers house who still smkines frequently and was able not to be tempted into it. I was so happy. I knew then I am free!

Hope it is working for you!
