  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

So would this technically count as our second moon? Or does its "quasi-stable orbit" make it a non-satelite? Because I very much like the idea that we have a second, albeit very very tiny, (and temporary) moon.

I think the article said it's too far away to be considered a satellite. Somehow it attached itself to us, and goes where we go. It's an astronomical sidekick. If the Earth were Fred Flintstone, it would be our Barney. Or maybe Mini-Me to our Dr. Evil. Or if we're Han Solo, it's a tiny Chewbacca. Hey, how about we call it Chewie?

It's been known for some time that there is a large number (perhaps thousands) of natural satellites in temporary Earth orbit -known as ‘mini-moons’ or Temporarily Captured Objects (TCOs). See QI - How Many Moons?

The video with the article makes it look like the asteroid orbits around the Sun more than it orbits around the Earth. It seems to be more of a case of our two orbits coinciding than anything else.
