SLEEPING DISCIPLES By George

Then he returned to his Disciples and found them sleeping. "Could you men not keep watch with me for one hour?" he asked Peter. "Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak." (Matthew 26:40-41)

If there was ever a time for the church to be on the alert, it's now. With all that's going on in our nation, Christians have an obligation to step up and pray harder than ever before. Jesus warned the disciples to "watch and pray" but what did he find them doing when he returned? Sleeping. As Matthew Henry said... "even the redeemed child of God can look at the sufferings of CHRIST in a drowsy manner." If that's so, how much more are we likely to neglect the hurt and sufferings going on in the world? We can easily find ourselves drifting off while a hurting world desperately needs to hear about the love and forgiveness found in CHRIST alone.

As followers of Christ we must stay awake long enough to do the things he has commanded us to do. We are in a crucial moment as a nation. We must earnestly pray for this country, our President, our economy, our families and especially, those who are without Christ. At a time such as this, we can't afford to shut our eyes.

This is definitely not the time to be a "sleeping Disciple". Instead it is a time for God’s people to get serious about all that's going on around them and faithfully do what he's called us as a church to do. We will have weak moments, just as the disciples did, but that's when we need to totally rely on his strength, not ours. He will never ask us to do anything that he won't give us the strength to do.

If what's going on in our world is not enough to keep the church alert and on it's feet, what will? We don't know the day nor hour our Lord will return, but when he does, he'll expect to find his people awake and watching. When Jesus returns, will you be watching or asleep at the wheel?
