  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's not something I think about often, or something I've extensively studied but I believe scripture implies that everyone will enter heaven at the same time, not directly after you die. People use Yahshua's words to the thief on the cross as an argument against it, but I don't believe He actually said them.

I believe the body sleeps until the resurrection, but we all do have souls. Souls are eternal. Souls don't sleep.

Absent from the body, present with the Lord. Heaven and Hell are essentially holding cells for our souls until the judgment. After the judgment, hell gets tossed into the lake of fire. So does the old heaven and old earth and everything is made anew.

Honestly haven't thought of it much, but I'm sure people probably have a bunch of proof texts to back up a variety of positions. As an annihilationist, I suppose soul sleep makes more sense if God isn't an infinitely offended feudal lord doling out infinite punishments who may or may not have performed any actual deeds to deserve it.

From what I understand it works like this:

We all die. We all go to "Hades", which is the realm of the dead. Some place where the soul goes. The redeemed will go to Paradise/Abraham's bossom. The damned will go to Hell. Though they are both realms of the dead, there is a separation between the two. You can't move from Hell to Paradise, or vice versa.

When Jesus returns and judgement comes, we will all go before the Throne (both those who died before Judgement, and those who were alive at the coming of Christ). Those who are found in the book of life will be allowed into Heaven, where God reigns. Those who who were not in the book of life are cast in the lake of fire. Thos who go to Heaven will experience the full attributes of a Holy, Merciful, Loving God. Those who are cast into the lake of fire will experience his eternal wrath.

God will then create a new earth for us to dwell on and enjoy as he originally intended.

I've heard so many stories about people saying they see heaven right before they die. I don't know exactly what that means, but it kind of makes me think you go to heaven when you die. I've also read that you "sleep" for a while before you go to heaven, so I'm not sure. I guess I don't mind either idea.:)

People believe a whole mess of things concerning this.
So for me I believe when we die we 'sleep' till the resurrection.
But others when they die they believe they go to heaven/hell.

What do you believe and why do you hold those views?

Sleep is a certain brain state of restructuring and reorganizing via REM. Kinda hard to argue in favor of that when there's no neural activity.

Hmm I don't think I follow you about the hades or heaven thing, but depending how you believe we're resurrected I think we are similar a little :)

I am not really following... I see you're an EO I guess? But it's not like I am saying something foreign in the bible, if i type in sleep in biblegateway I can find tons of random verses of examples of people 'sleeping'.

"For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption;"

Well as far as salvation is concerned it doesn't matter I guess. I was born again without knowing about the soul sleep thing. Also believed in pre-tribulation rapture back then too. But it goes to show you people obsess over things that have nothing to do with salvation but it's nice to talk about them.

Hehe I have issues with the annihilationist view my self

But yeah I guess there is a bunch of ways everyone can back up their views with scripture. But in the end all scripture should mesh and come to one conclusion.

I don't think that would be enough to convince me of what you were telling me about the soul not sleeping. Because I view all of this in a much different light what we get out of these scriptures are different

The problem is that on a lot of things it doesn't. We pick and choose pieces from books composed over hundreds of years to create a coherent narrative but it's all a selective interpretation. For example, the idea of an afterlife is a slowly developing idea through the Hebrew Scriptures but it bears little resemblance to our modern view of hell and heaven.
