The only reason reparations would be worth it would be if we were to then eliminate programs and organizations like affermative action, NAACP, United Negro College Fund, Rainbow Coalition, etc.

Theoretically, if reparations even things out then we wouldn't need these organizations any more. The trouble is we all know that if reparations are paid none of this will happen.

Let' see here;

"It's encouraging to see someone standing up to what's "politically correct.""

If by standing up to 'political correctness' you mean bashing a left wing cause on a conservative forum, I must admit that I am unimpressed by the courage required to do such a thing. But I am perhaps impressed by Smilin's reluctance to use his own minority status to advance his own career. If he has the courage to deny himself a potential advantage in real life, then more power to him. As for PC bashing; what could be more PC than that?

Several here are making the mistake of assuming that individual whites would be responsible for the reparations. No, the guilty agent would be the U.S., and that would implicate all of us, including the recipients of the aid. It may be ironic, but that's what happens whenever a government entity is named in a lawsuit initiated by its own citizens.

What about the North? It was the slave trade that produced the seed money for the industries which flourished in the North. The entire country was implicated in this crime, not just the South.

Some of you seem to think that if reparations are made that will (or should) eliminate all other forms of aid to blacks. This does not follow, and it especially doesn't follow in reference to the private organizations named above. You may not like the NAACP, for instance, but the government does not have the authority to legislate it out of existence, reparations or otherwise.

Affirmative Action is aid to individual minorities; it does not help improve minority communities. In fact it can be said to harm them by facilitating brain drain when individuals are promoted into the middle class and subsequently leave the communities from which they came. It is not an effective answer to racial inequities, and that illustrates once again that the logic of individual integrity is generally misapplied when it is used to address group dynamics.

" Blacks have more opportunities in this country today than anyone else. "

Easy to say; have you actually looked into the social and political dynamics of black communities, or did you just infer that affirmative action had somehow catapulted them to a privelaged status of which the rest of us can only dream and wallow in envy?

"Where in the Bill of Rights are we guaranteed anything as a citizen of the United States anything other than Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

That wording is actually from the Declaration, but the relevant section of the B of R would be the 5th Amendment garuntee against loss of life, liberty, or property without just compensation. As the decendants of people denied just that, the reparations argument claims that blacks are entitled to the compensation owed their ancestors. This is hardly a unique claim under American law.

"In closing....I reiterate; ANYONE who would use their heritage for personal gain is a coward and a shame to their ethnic culture.
If that sounds of white superiority to you...I won't apologize...
for my people were here first..and we are proud to be self-sufficient."

Does this opposition to use of heritage for personal gain extend to marketing techniques used by many Native American communities as a means to bolster local tourist industries and thereby gain self-sufficiency? Are you saying that you would be opposed to any attempts to regain control of resources taken by the U.S. through the courts? Were all the lawsuits filed under the ICC wrong? Are the Lakota wrong to try and regain the Black Hills? Was Taos Pueblo wrong to negotiate return of Blue Lake based on their own heritage? Were the Western Shoshone wrong to seek return of lands taken from their own forefathers? Or is it only the descendants of black slaves that are somehow abusing their heritage?

Yes, btw, I understand that many were enslaved besides blacks. I dont see the relevance of this point.

Let me reiterate my position. I do not support reparations as such, simply because I know there is too much opposition to the idea. But I do support efforts to rebuild underprivelaged communities (minority or otherwise) in whatever effective form that may take. If that strikes anyone as unjust, then they should take a good long and hard look at the way resources are normally allocated, because they are regularly diverted to lily-white suburbs on a regular basis. If anytone thinks this has no deliterious effects on the rest of American (red, black, white, or green for that matter), then you yuo need to clear the stars from your eyes. The rhetoric of equality has indeed created some wonderful institutions; it has also enabled people to gloss over some real travesties. If support for reparations is one way to divert money into such communities, and if the implimentation of such programs can be managed well, then I am all for it. To the extent that many of the objections raised here illustrate a general opposition to pro-minority programs, your opposition to reparations becomes an opposition to any form of aid, including those I do advocate.

BTW: Some of the comments here do demonstrate a real misplaced jealosy of people and communities which really are in need of help. If anyone thinks bashing programs to help them somehow means standing up to political correctness and speaking on behalf of the underdog, then that is taking double-speak to a new level.
