Skirts for men??

Hello, I have recently noticed in the news an exhibit in New York about men wearing skirts. I was wondering about some of your views on this. It was not talking about men wearing women's skirts but skirts designed and made for men. I also decided to do some looking up on the Internet and noticed that there were manufacturers who make men's skirts/kilt like garments.

Even though some of them have kilt in the name I know I saw one also on a tv show on Tech TV and my sister and I thought it was a skirt. So again my question is what do you all think of men wearing skirt like garments that are made for men for no reason other than preference (not wearing because of cultural reasons or because of heratige)?

This is a tricky one. The Bible says for women not to look like men and for men not to look like women, but according to which time period's fashion? Men in Biblical days did not wear pants, they wore robes which, in essence, was nothing more than a piece of fabric draped over the shoulders and tied at the waist with a sash. They looked similar to a dress. Then again, if women aren't to look like men then I am sinning sitting in this very seat wearing my blue jeans.

I think if they want to wear them, while I may not understand why LOL, then more power to them. If they start wearing neon pink spandex mini's...then there's a problem. Hehe

I've seen people in music groups where skirts from time to time, but that was quite a long time ago.

kilts on scots, robes on those whose society, religion, tradition dictates the wearing of skirted garments -fine. But i don't think i could ever take it seriously as a 'fashion' choice. I'm just picturing the burly builders next door, working in floral skirts!

I can't imagine why a guy would want to wear a skirt. I would think (unless the skirt was really long) that guys who aren't used to sitting "ladylike" might cause quite a stir if they didn't pay attention to their mannerisms.

It depends on what type of skirt. If they start wearing pink floral then there is a problem. I don't think I would want my husband to walk around in a skirt!

Dress in defined by society and culture, no so many years ago, women weren't considered women if they wore pants.

I see nothing wrong with kilts, but they're not the fashion right now. Imagine what comments I'd get if I, as a teacher, wore a kilt to work? Furthermore, women already know how to wear a skirt so as not to accidently 'flash'. I wouldn't know how to wear a kilt properly to avoid that problem so I wouldn't chance it.

That said, I really don't think I'd look like a woman if I wore a kilt.

The ones I've seen have been quite masculine - no flowers or anything. If the "right" man wore them, I don't think they'd be mistaken for a woman. At all. I said in the thread in the young adults forum that I've seen them before, and that they're something I could get used to.

I have GOT to tell a story here. Samuel L. Jackson was on the Leno show about a year ago, promoting a movie in which he wore a kilt. Jay asked him if he wore anything under the kilt. Jackson replied "Only my wife's lipstick." Of course, he is my new hero. M

Thats a funny story. I probably wouldnt wear a skirt myself. I have a feeling that it wouldnt look all that good. But if some other dude wanted to sport one I see no problem with it. More power to him.

I know the thread is basicly dead but i happened to stumble across it so i thought i would reply as a person that wears a Utilikilt. I have been wearing one for the past few months and have made it part of my regular everyday wardrobe.

It not just in biblical times. Even today there are parts of the world where men where skirt like garments. When i wear my Utilikilt, I don't look like a woman. I'm sure msjones21 don't look like a man in her blue jeans.

I doubt they would wear them to work the same way women in construction don't wear skirt.

I don't know about the other companies but the Utilikilts fall between the legs when I sit "manlike" so it is not an issue.

Yup. Here in america it wasn't until World War 2 that women started wearing pants. During WWII women needed to work in the factories and skirts and dresses were a safty hazard. After WWII women decided to keep wearing pants.

I made it 26 years of my life and never had Thai food. Never wanted and had no desire to try it. Then a girl I was dating wanted to go and now i get Thai food for lunch once a week. Its my favorite type of food. Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean you shouldn't try to.

This is the Lords commandment for a reason~~(you can try and tell me all day long that we are no longer the Levitical laws or such things, but to do that/or say that then we are no longer under the Ten Commandments, since they were given around the same time period. God gives us these types of warnings because He saw that there would be problems in the future if we did them. So in essence He was just saying "Hey I love you and I want you to becareful, so watch out." Kind of in the same way that you would warn someone about playing in traffic when they are kids.)

I do NOT agree with ANYTHING that society tell me is "ok" to do. I feel and have learned in the past that if you have any questions about anything, the answer will always do the oposite of todays sociteies ideas/morals(or acually lack there of)
