The ESV is an Evangelical Protestant translation, and they do not accept the LXX as the Old Testament. So they have edited out Sirach, Tobit, Judith, Wisdom of Solomon, the Maccabees and so forth. It is nice to see that the New English Translation is translating those books.

What book is the New English Translation?
Can't believe I wasted my money on a Bible wrapped up in nice plastic, only to find one of my favourite books of the Bible taken out. If I had seen what was coming, I would buy a better version.

I wonder what version of what Bible cuts out the gospels...that Bible must probably be the worst ...

When you look for a Bible, make sure it says 'with Deutercanon' or 'with Apocrypha' , though we Orthodox/Catholic really dislike the A word.

The OT Orthodox Study Bible will be out in a year or two and will contain the entire (as recognized by Orthodox since 397) OT Scriptures.

If you get the free E-Sword electronic Bible study tool, PM myself [name]Oblio[/name] or [name]Philip[/name] for a copy of the RSV with Deuterocanon.

e.g.

Sir 1:1-4 RSVA All wisdom comes from the Lord and is with him for ever. (2) The sand of the sea, the drops of rain, and the days of eternity--who can count them? (3) The height of heaven, the breadth of the earth, the abyss, and wisdom--who can search them out? (4) Wisdom was created before all things, and prudent understanding from eternity.

The New English Translation is still in the process of translating the Apocrypha, but it is an excellent translation.
The complete Bible the only one there is right now is the Revised Standard Version 1973 with Expanded Apocrypha. The only edition is the New Oxford Annotated Bible. If you like a questionable translation it is also available in the New Revised Standand Version.
The Catholic translations will have Sirach, The New Jerusalem Bible and the New American Bible as well. The Revised English Bible with Apocrypha has them as well.

Sirach can be a little...well...misogynistic.

Judge for yourself. Search the online text for instances of "woman", "wife", and "daughter"...

no no, I'm not relying on Sirach to increase my chances for dating...lol...

I've read the book of Sirach from the good news Bible. I find that the author of it, has more dislikes against arrogrant and ignorant people than just women. And he says it clearly, women need to be good wives and not to be excused if they're arrogrant just like normal men.

The main reason I find Sirach interesting is because it gets straight to the very point of a point. It high lights of the different people that are present in our society. Poor people are still in our society, as well as rich people...and so he presents the basic characteristics of these people, which are still so evident today despite the change in culture.

But I'd like a better translation, to increase my further understanding of some of the details within it.

I like Sirach.

So did Jesus---He alluded to it numerous times:

So true...it's one of the more interesting books of the Bible in my opinion.

But it's left out due to a couple of board members decision, from ESV.

I'll be eyeing out for any new versions of the Bible with Sirach.....I hope I don't make the same mistake.

The Apocrypha King James Version Study the Apocraypha in the Poetry of King James Version by World Bible Publishing

Even though it is in archaic modern English (KJV), it is hardbound, nice heavy stock, and you dont have to run out and get an entire new Bible. I found it in a Protestant bookstore for $8. It has Sirach (Ecclesiasticus).

Is that the newest edition?
I know the ESV and several other versions came out recently, but I was given a book years ago. It was a King James, but it had words such as thy and thou...made reading interesting but harder...I was 7/8 at that time...lol.....

Well, I consider the ESV to be the best translation currently available and in ten years or so I think it will replace the NIV.

Instead of tossing it you could just buy a copy of the Apocrypha, I would recommend the Oxford Annotated Fourth Edition.

Or you could just wait for the overseas version. ESV.com's FAQ states:
Will there be an edition that includes the Apocrypha?

Crossway Bibles won't be publishing an edition with the Apocrypha, but HarperCollins UK may. You may want to check with them for more information. As we learn more, we will post it here.

I'm so annoyed that the ESV version dosen't include the book of Sirach. It such a good philosophy Book!

Whats the main reason for it being excluded as well as the other books?

The Wisdom of ben Sirach is one of my favorite book. It is in the Septuagint and the original 1611 KJV.
