• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I did. I had sinusitis about 8-10 times a year. I recently (December 8, 2006) had sinus surgery. Today, I feel much better. My allergies are not as severe as they have been and I no longer suffer from ear aches, sinus pressure and the like.

Sinusitis can occur during an upper respiratory tract infection, as a complication of tooth infection, allergy; or can even accompany measles.

Treatment: Aggressive; anti-biotic therapy +/- decongestants (nose drops, yum yum). Treating the underlying and provocative condition can reduce the recurrence/appearance rate of sinusitis. Surgery should always be a last resort, and certainly isn't indicated in all patients.

Complications: nearby tissues such as ear, mastoid and brain can be secondarily affected - so always get treatment; and make sure the doctor caring for you treats it aggressively. Else, fire him, and get another one!

Hi. I have sinusitis and asthma (both same tissue). I take nasonex when it's bad but my doctor has me on a salicilin free diet (i.e. no spices, artificial preservatives, tea, coffee or medication containing asprin. Basically, I eat all fresh food.), which doesn't cure it but it helps a great deal.
I use Nasonex when it's bad (when it's prescribed for me) but find it only works well for a few days. After that, it has the opposite effect and starts to cause problems for me again. Saline sprays also don't cut it long-term.

Fill a glass full of warm (100 degree) water.

Add just enough salt to make a saline solution (very mildly salty water).

Stir the salt until it dissolves.

Now (and this takes practice), you're going to put the glass up to your nostrils, suck in the water through your nose, and spit it out through your mouth until you've used up all the water.

Initially, you can expect some really nasty stuff to come out of your nose and sinuses; but the water will eventually clear and when you're through, blow your nose and you'll be able to breathe very comfortably for several hours.

I do this twice a day (four times during cedar season here in Texas) and I've gone from having sinus infections eight to ten times a year to once a year -- maybe.

The other solution which is perfectly natural, and very effective is:

1 tspn baking soda
1 tspn sugar
1 tspn salt

Dissolve in warm water, and suck it up through your nostrils.

This is FANTASTIC for clearing out your sinuses and will also be very effective for several hours (and you don't have to drink it through your nose and spit it out ;) That sounds icky.)

Word of warning: Do NOT do what I did and tilt your head back so the solution can drain into your ears and unblock them as well. I did, and it stings so badly that I thought I'd done permanent damage. It didn't help my blocked ears, and only irritated.

For sinuses and nostrils, though, it's the best solution I've ever tried - better than the many and various meds I've tried (including prescriptions). Oh, and you can use this solution as often as you need to. Best to do it outside or over a basin as you get lots of drainage.

My husband's sinusitis is so bad now that he needs surgery April 5th. He's had the awful sneezing, dripping, nose blowing etc. for two years, and since November he developed the nastiest cough in addition to that, which wears him out. He's a teacher, has to talk all day, but also has to cough all day so that's awful. And he coughs at night too. Yes the coughing is caused by the sinusitis.

He used several medications, including nasonex which gave him headaches, and a stronger form of fluticason (which is what nasonex is made of), and mometason. They increased the coughing so he quit taking them. It breaks my heart to hear him cough all the time, it sounds like suffocating. And it makes conversation extremely difficult. His smell is gone too.

He's treated for asthma now too; we hope the asthma symptoms will go away after the surgery because asthma is a life sentence.

I myself have struggled with severe cold like symptoms for 10 years. I have not been able to smell anything for that length of time, with only a few exceptions. I had runny nose, congestion, itchy eyes and ears. I found out that I am sensitive to all wheat and dairy products. If I go completely off of them, the symptoms will clear up within a week most of the time, but sometimes up to 21 days to completely rid yourself. This is a very hard eating lifestyle to adapt, but if you stay strong, you will feel much better!! Cut out sugar as well and you will lose weight, guaranteed. I lost 20 pounds in my first month, no joke. You can eat meat, eggs, nuts, veggies, fruit, potato, rice...anything with no dairy, wheat, or sugar ingredients. Good luck!! Let me know if it works for you..and guess what? You'll be able to BREATHE!!!:yum:

Sinusitis? Sounds intriguing. For what must be now 7 years, I feel like I always have a cold. My nasal passages feel constricted, my throat feels dry all the time but I've never really had a cough as far as I know. My doc gave me some aqueous nasal spray - beconase, but that doesn't work. Common colds last 6 weeks and sometimes shift to my chest for another 6 weeks...

And yet my doc is unwilling to do anything. I'd love to go and go and see a specialist in ENT to see if there's anything that can done because it's made my life torture. Maybe it's all coincidence, but I've also been pretty tired the same amount of time. Almost exactly the same amount of time since I developed hypothyroidism.

Does any of this sound like sinusitis?

I'm not sure if its sinusitis, but have you tried/ thought about doing water steam treatments--- my Mom has used that when she has nasal/throat issues. Also, I've heard that a spoonful of honey every day can help with alot of throat problems.

Of course, please see your doctor or a specialist about this--- hopefully they will be able to find out what's going on with you. They really need a chance to look over all your symptoms and take a look at your throat before anything can be certain.
