You know, I've come to a realization recently. A lot of people worry about the sin inside video games. What about the sin in playing a certain video game.

e.g. Sloth

I have come to wonder whether in certain instances the video game that I play has no bearing on my career or other God given abilities. This may not be the case, but it did come to mind. Sometimes we don't necessarily think about things like Sloth because they aren't as publicized. These sort of things are probably far more of a concern than killing orcs or Kilrathi or something.

Playing games that engage the mind or the senses can help out a lot. Playing games that take up a lot of time, have online persistence (impacting real-life scheduling), or games which include violence without any skill or thought would seem to be dangerous to me. I've seen online persistent world roleplaying games almost kill friends' academic careers, not because they sinned by killed helpless goblins, but because they killed goblins instead of studying.

You do have a very good point. Yet games can also be used for good. For example, they have been a way of escaping temptations of lust for a good long while. Not foolproof of course, but if I am playing a good shooter, that takes my mind off the temptation at least for a while.

I dont think Jesus would have played monopoly. The whole point of the game is greed, trying to make the other person bankrupt. If Jesus played the game and another one of his brothers was in need he would give what he had to help out the other person.
I read this last night and I'm not quite sure how to respond as I'm not sure whether it is sarcasm or not.

It's just a game. I play and enjoy Doom III... I'm destroying evil. :p

it is just a game, a real fantasy... or mayby nightmare, cuz destroying demons via chaingun, SAVING the Humankind from Hell, walking around the spooky levels where the ID´s points of interests are painted to the walls as pentagrams and upsidedown crosses and shooting the devil down with an rocketlauncher sure aint got nothing to do with reality.

but as i readed from some guy´s post here at forums: He also wroted that:
IT CANT BE ANYMORE CHRISTIAN THAN... >the things what i just
said about Doom3!
in this game it`s all about horror, destruction, blood and gore, satanic athmosphere and it´s Pretty BAD that someone really thinks that this is
the Most Christian Stuff what there is!

but it seems like the ones who dont live in christ live in world filled with myths, and the world´s "accepted" view of GOOD & EVIL is very twisted, like in Fantasy the Evil side are the "Ancient Evil Monsters" lurking in the "Darkness".

and the Good side are the Humans or Elfs (practicing White Magic and Drinking Beer) in their MAGICAL Kingdom, and they´ve even got Priests (i wonder who they serve?) and Vice old Wizards (whit their Santa Claus look) and they live in perfect harmony with MOTHER NATURE(wht ever happened to God the Father), and they use the Elements of Nature (Witchcraft) in their Weapons agains Evil and they also mine MANA & ETHER from the earth.

Sounds like HArry Potter and that aint Good...

tell me when ur at a tense part of the game, the level or stage u have been trying to get over for the last five weeks and someone happens to trip the power switch or put of the screen what would ur reaction be if u still had the uzzi or the shotgun in ur hand?

the game can so easily affect u! most of us at thetime would rather play foran extra half hour than to go read the bible!

That is why I like games like mario cart, super smash brothers, and Metroid. You aren't killing people in them. You may hit someone out of the ring in SSB, slow someone down in MC... and in Metroid you are only killing dangerous animals and aliens.
I have gotten interested in Prince of Persia, but that is walking a thin line. He's killing people but they are not really people anymore... more like evil creatures.
Now playing videogames (period) can still become a sin if you hold it higher than the Lord. All those Spell casting, spy shooting, car stealing games are not appealing to me. Adventure, finding the treasure, defeating evil, solving puzzles... Those are my games... SSB and Mario Cart are just good clean competitive fun just like wrestling, football... Is running into peole loving? doesn't sound like it to me but in the context of certain sports, that is what the other people expect and understand will happen.

I have noticed this and if I had the time and energy plus the full know how of developing computer games I would consider making a computer game with a Christian theme to it, sort of like how the Redemption card game brought Christian values into the sin packed world of trading card games. I have done some computer programming but this would be on a scale of which I have never been close to atempting. Any suggestions regarding genre (RPG, Shooter, ETC.) and I might just explore this route a little further.

RadG

PS: Even if it is not done in real life what Jesus has said about adultury and lusting after a woman in your heart, and what he said about murder and hating your brother shows that it is still sin.

Right On Bro !!!
i have been thinking/Designing that kinda stuff also, i mean a video game which has "Christ Server´s" themes... and a bit more like just themes AND also nothing simple, boring bunch a bible tales.

but a real adventure kinda game with mini-games, choice making, creativity using, multiplayer, humor, dramatic story(reality like), platforming and all...
Influences from the Games like: Kingdom Hearts, Ratchet & Clank, WarCaft, Medievil and Music Generator.

So basicly and Action Adventure RPG Platformer about God´s Warrior of Spiritual and Real Warfare, playable in single player, or up to 4 players co-op.
the game would have 2 world , THIS sinful dark world of suffering and the Supreme Kingdom of Unlimited Joy,=>Heaven, also accessable!

The player/s would form a Warrior klan, whit a RPG elements like in Kingdom Hearts and Fight against the ENEMY-troops of DarkSide and collecting Treasures for the Upcoming eternal Kingdom, using Miracle Powers of God (MP)which would also have Elemental powers like: fire, elecric, water, ice, wind, heal, shield.(all elements were made by lord for lord, not for witchcraft poop) in their spiritual weapons in like: the SWORD ofcourse and also: Club, Hammer, Crossbow, GunBlade, Axe and Shield.

the action would feature helping fellow warriors, fighting to keep the evil off(from inside the player him/her self too)... player could like sacrifice his own health(HP) to help sum old Bum, to ahve the power to get up and saved.

As platformers always have that collecting of something, this game would have collecting of: the dad´s lost word boox: x66.=>whole bible. and finding those boox from the dark lands would open up mini-games, MAXI-games actually: where even Lord Christ would be playable character, maxi-games like: Music Making=>Ragga,Metal...what ever, with unique sound clips like: weaponry, bird sounds..., hover boarding in the Kingdom, Bubble Ball-gaming which features a square shaped "pool" where players would move ON water and the Ball would be a water bubble.
also girls would want to play that kinda games.

....... i´ve got a lots of ideas, and i think that as god created the possiblity to make video games and really think they(possibilities) should be used, and indeed used to Glorify the Master Chief: God.

well that possibility sure is in use out there in world but the world doesnt thank or respect god for it, that IS their loose!
yes sinning is sinning also in toughts(and we do sins evéryday, as sin is a thing what god would not want us to do) but jesus died for our sins, and gave us holy spirit to guide us the seek the will of lord in our acts.

I WANT TO MAKE GOD KNOWN!!! (it´s hard under all the problems)

There was once a compnay named Wisdom Tree that (eventually) made Christian-themed video games. The only problem is that these games, from an entertainment standpoint, weren't often that good. I'm guessing it was because they didn't have a huge budget to work with.

Here's a site with more info on them in case you are interested:

You grab objects, trade objects, interact with non-player characters, and zap opponents.
