"Many, indeed, as if they wished to avert odium from God, admit election in such a way as to deny that any one is reprobated. But this is puerile and absurd, because election itself could not exist without being opposed to reprobation. God is said to separate those whom he adopts to salvation. Whom God passes by, therefore, he reprobates, and from no other cause than his determination to exclude them from the inheritance which he predestines for his children. And the petulance of men is intolerable, if it refuses to be restrained by the word of God, which treats of his incomprehensible counsel, adored by angels themselves..."
-John Calvin, Institutes 3.23.1

I chose double predestination.

Just wanted to know what the prevailing view is around here.

Does God choose the Elect and simply pass over the rest, allowing them them to do their own thing? Or does God actively keep the reprobate from salvation?

God is soverign in ALL things.

I also chose double, simply because logically(for me), "the passing over" of the reprobate IS an action on God's part.

I decided to do this poll because of a question in "ask a calvinist", and 2 different people claimed that "their" view was the one most widely held around here. Or at least thought that, so I figured I clear it up and see for sure what the more widely held view is.

I was not referring to my view as being the one most widely held, as you'll note above that I am "double or nothing", so to speak. :) I was also not speaking of the view most widely held on SR, but among modern Calvinists in general.

I guess I put that badly....I didn't really mean it as it sounded, only that I saw one person say that everyone he knows is single predestination, and the other say that everyone he knows is double.......I don't remember who said what. It just got me curious, so I decided to do the poll....

Ah. My apologies. I don't mean to get all defensive, just wanted to clarify what I meant. Anyway, perhaps one of the factors here is where I live. You already know the trouble I've been having finding a Reformed church. Most of the Calvinists I know are SBC (or other Baptist), too. Not that I'm saying there's a connection between the Baptists and single predestination, of course.

but there may be ;) ...my pastor is single*, and a baptist.....hmmmm:scratch:

I think it's perfectly ok to assume that a factor would be geographical location...and denomination.

*single predestination that is......:p

I should have made it clear that the voting was for calvinists only...no offense, but I'm trying to gauge something here, and non-calvinist votes only confuse the issue.....

looks like so far, at least here in SR, double-predestination is the view.....
