  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Singing or Listening

Hey everyone!
I recently went on a youth retreat and I noticed that a friend I had met wasn't singing yet he was a very strong believer. I asked him why and he said it was just because he gets more out of it if he sits and listens to the words and meditates. So I was just wondering what do you think is better, to sing or listen? I personally LOVE to sing even though I know my voice is horrible lol! I will sing as loud as I can, maybe because the band is playing so loud that even if I was screaming you couldn't hear me but anyway just wondering what other people think!

I'm a singer, but i do understand where your friend is coming from. when i'm not leading i sometimes enjoy just sitting and listening for a song or to. even more so when its a weekend retreat and i'm doing a lot of singing and my voice just needs a rest.

 I think both singing and listening are great. I love to sing along but ya know...you get touched in different ways so when you just sit and listen to the words of something it can be so powerful as well. But yeah, personally I like to sing most of the time. :D

same here :)

 I love to sing harmony, and in a Vineyard worship & praise fest, I'm all over the chart. When I'm alone, or sometimes out and about and unaware, I hum -- seems to be a real song, but nothing I actually know; somebody asks what the song is, and I don't know. I really think God gave it to me as a stress-reducer, and I view it as a personal gift. However, there are times I'm overcome with the presence of God, and closing my eyes I just get lost in sounds and wonder at His presence.

Although -- at times, I have a cold and know I'm probably way off tune so I try hard to remain silent! ;) cb

I kow for me it is situational. I am in choir, so during Praise and Worship I am singing, but sometimes I don't sing and just get lost in Worship. During other choir performances I usually sing along when appropiate. If I am moved bu a song tho, I will just soak it up.

That rawks, good story!

I have to agree with your friend a whole lot. Singing is fun at times, and I love to sing when the band is loud or the music is louder than me; but there are definitely moments where either the song kinda gets hits home and God & I just start whispering to each other, or even with the words that are in the song ...I just find I come up speechless before God. I love that some songs are exactally the words my heart has been searching for, but other times there's no explaining or no great way to express myself ...that's one reason I think even instrumentals can be very worshipful.
Worship is awesome, but since it's really our gift to God, not from God, we always have to be careful ...whatever we're doing, that we're not just going for the God-high and that it really is to do a service for God.

rock on,

I understand but I dont. Now you have to understand where I am comming from... I'm a Worship Pastor... I want everyone to sing. Let me make a couple points.

1. Worship is for God and God alone.... the word is for man. Sure we reap the benefits of worship because it is in our worship that God can truly manifest himself in supernatural ways.

2. No where in the bible can you find scripture that states praise is a quite thing. In fact it is quite the oposite. In Rev. it says that the Heavens will thunder with Praise. Praise can not be done quietly.

3. Worship is different than Praise. You may be standing with your hands raised singing, the person on your right may have their face burried in their hands in brokeness, the person on your left may be lying postrate on the floore in worship, yet all are worshipping.

Just my thoughts

Blessings
Tim

u need to have a good balance
we always have praise bands in our church and i will agree that it is often great to just listen, because u can share in the performers faith, but nothing can beat singing cos its like communicating directly to GOD and saying 'U R AMAZING, U RULE, I LOVE U'!!!!!!!

if u support free speach for all, dont report or delete this message.

ps.if you do do one of these you are denying people to express their own opinion online and you are censoring perfectly normal things. lets not live in a closed society
