I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels that THE WORLD get in the way of christianity. What I mean by that is TV, Bars, Nudity around every corner and I'm sorry to say, The Internet.

What I would love is a place to go where all those things are taken away for a short time. Don't get me wrong, I love my internet and going to see a movie is to me one of the best things to do.

All I want is a place to go where I can get away from the world for a short time and recharge my christian batteries.

I then thought to myself, I could make something like that. A type of commune where everyone mucks in. Where we can have daily worship together as a group, But also have quiet time where we can reflect on our own journey with God.

If I were to do this, I would make it in the Highlands of Scotland. Not only are you surrounded with Gods beautiful creation, it would also be good for the local economy.

What do you think, would it be worth doing this?

I definately kow what you mean - I sometimes wish I could get away from this world, if only for a while, and just be christian above all. With the student budget and all the hectic it's sort of hard, but I think those places actually exist. Some friends of mine have done something similar in Lapland somewhere (really beautiful as well, I wish I'd remember what the place was called...) and in Taizé, which is somewhere in France. And I think that many other cloysters also have room guests, that could be something for the likes of you and me (if that's what you meant?)

EDIT// Oh, and at least here in Finland we have something called silence retreats over weekends in several deifferent places. Just came to think about that, could be cool sometimes.

That would be modern monasticism. Given that a very large percentage of people in the large Roman cities were slaves or totally dependant on others for their livelihood, few in NT times could ever live like that, away from society.

Jesus told us He was sending us into the world just as He had been. He was no isolationist, judging by the jibes of being a party goer.

I totally agree. But even he went into the wilderness for a short time. Granted he was tested, But it helped prepare him for what he had to do.

Im not suggesting some sort of monastic life here, simply a short break to recharge our christian batteries, so that we are able to better fight the temptations of the world. Think of it more like summer camp, but for adults.

I think that's a great idea. A place to gather, reflect, pray and have fellowship. But it would never work for me. Only because I would be way too tempted to visit all the wonderful Highland whisky distilleries! :p

I feel you on this one. I have been trying to integrate some reflective time into my daily routine. Not sucking down mass media or listening to what other people think; finding my own thoughts and some creative solutions to common problems.

This is the challenge of the Holy Way. The life we have picked is perhaps the hardest one. But I love it, by God I love it.

Have you ever heard of the Iona Community?

Otherwise, maybe try a weekend trek with just some simple camping equipment, food and water, your bible, a notebook and maybe an mp3 player with only devotional materials on it. Maybe get some materials on office prayers (liturgy of the hours).

I highly recommend Liathach or that area. It was gorgeous when I visited there about 20 yrs ago.

Does your church offer any retreats or get-aways? You might get some good recommendations from your pastor.

Maybe a retreat on Iona. Treat yourself to a visit to Ledaig/Tobermory on the way in and Oban on the way out, and immerse yourself in the spirituality of the Iona Community for a week in between.

Sounds like a monastery pilgrimage is in your future.

Hi there genestealerbroodlord!!! What a USERNAME! Not one that anybody would soon forget ,...mis spell maybe but not forget!....But Jesus gave us a prescription that We should pray often and meditate day and night on Him who came to Save us . We should go to our room or prayer closet and close the door , and pray to our father in secret Who will hear You in secret and reward You abundantly not to be out in the the world like the hippocrites standing on street corners or synagogues(ie some churches) repeating their prayers repetitavely but converse with Your Lord in secret That is Your MAIN VEIN for a personal relationship with Christ Matthew 6:5&6 But also I would encourage You that after You have been spiritually filled With His Holy Spirit to not forsake Your self from gathering with other believers In the Name of our Lord Jesus genestealerbroodlord Fight the good fight and replenish Your self in the Lord don't Hide your light let it shine in the world ....Amen and Amen....Dave
