I am also a worship minister, and I have an opinion on this topic. I am not the best guitar player, but I lead worship with my guitar. I am not the best singer, but I lead worship by vocally leading the songs. But, my spiritual gifts include the gift of worship leading. This is where I am heading: each of us is gifted in a particular way. It's not about making the worship time a "Christian copy" of Star Search. It's about helping people find their spiritual gifts and helping them find a way to use them to serve the Lord. A "performer" as was originally described, no matter how talented (or untalented) they are, is not gifted to be a worship leader. Therefore, they should not lead worship. Bottom line.

Some excellent posts on here, thanks for your input Keyz and ReveLationz. In reply to a couple of points. One about trumpet blowing, in the UK we have a saying 'when someone is blowing their own trumpet' which means they're promoting themselves. If someone would have ran ahead of the crowd and blown his or her own trumpet at Jericho I'm sure they'd have received a rebuke.

The lady in question had no desire to serve the church. She was barely with us a few months when she started 'blowing her own trumpet' and she left shortly after cos she didn't think she was getting a fair share of the microphone. That's the bottom line, sort of speaks for itself. We have had others who weren't great singers but have brought a wonderful offering to the table. Give me God's anointing over fitting the criteria any day.

Bless you all.

No question about it. I constantly pray for Gos' spirit of discernment when choosing people to participate in the worship ministry. A general rule is: if I see them worshipping in our worship times and they seem to be REALLY worshipping, I'll try and find out if they want to help lead from the stage. I generally am more pleased when I approach someone else than when they approach me. This isn't a "hard-and-fast" rule, but generally true. Either way, we never proceed without asking God about it!
