  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi, I've got sorta a silly question I need an opinion on from people. You see I gave up sweets for Lent, but there are some vanilla wafers in the house still and I was wondering if people would consider them sweets or not. I figure there's not likely a technical definiton, so I'm just ask for opinions. I know it's a silly question to start a whole topic for but whatever.

I would, but I think it depends on what you meant by "giving up sweets." What did you intend? What were you trying to accomplish?

Well I basically thought giving up sweets was something I could give up that wouldn't be to hard but would still challenge me. I've done it before but it just seems to be a good option. I'm not sure what I'd even consider sweets exactly though, which I suppose isn't good. Probably should've made an exact definiton for me. The fact the vanilla wafers have sugar would make then more like sweets.

POD, I would say that it depends on your heart. The fact that you're asking probably means that for you the wafers re something you're suppsoed to give up. I think that Lenten fasts are great things, but if we make them only to find ways to "cheat" or find a loophole there isn't much point to them. < Note: this is not directed at you it's a general observation. Only you can know what your heart was when u gave up "sweets" :)

For me, the vanilla waffers would be considered "sweets" because of the high sugar content. However, what you consider "sweets" for you may be totally different. The problem with that is skirting the issue by "justifying" why you should and shouldn't eat something because it is "technically" not a "sweet". Define your definition of what you consider a "sweet" and go from there.

Brother, myself being someone who tries, in God's will, not to eat sweet things during Lent, let me give you some advice. Let your conscience be your guide, and another poster is right when saying that if you are asking it probably means you shouldn't eat it.
Some things may be obvious like a Milkyway, but other things may not. See, I have a serious sweet tooth and even though I may not be eating "sweets", I may be trying to satisfy my passion by eating something sweet tasting like oatmeal with a bunch of brown sugar on it. So, I just try to take everything sweet tasting out of my diet.
And always remember, that is someone offers you a sweet, especially to buy one, you should take it and eat it with joy and thanksgiving. I also encourage you to ask your Spiritual Father/Spiritual Director what kind of fast is best for you. A Monk from Mt. Athos once told me that he would not give ANY advice on fasting, that this was entirely between you and your Spiritual Father. So, I give you this advice with the most dread. God's peace to you. Pray for me.
