  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The Talmud mentions the strange occurance of the lot and the scarlet thread not turning white as having happened on and off right up untill 30 AD when it stops entirely. Its important to note that this isnt a biblicaly commanded practise, but stems from Isaiah were G-d says "though your sins be red as scarlet, I shall make them white as wool." so the turning of the thread from scarlet to white was to signify that G-d accepted the sacrifice.

Tractate Yoma in the Talmud is wholly given over to laws pertaining to Yom Kippur. But before it mentions these strange occurances it mentions why, in the verses before. Quoting from a Baraisa, the Talmud begins with a discussion of the deteriorating spiritual condition of the Jewish people during the second Temple period. Throughout this fascinating discourse, the miraculous events that transpired during the Temple ceremonies are the barometer by which the Baraisa measures the religious decline of the nation of Israel during this difficult epoch in Jewish history. The period of time examined in this assessment begins with the era during which Shimon HaTzaddik officiated as the high priest until the time that the Romans destroyed the second Temple in the year 70 C.E. More specifically, the Talmud breaks this period down into three successive stages, with the first stage being the most meritorious, the second marking a gradual spiritual decline, and the third the most deleterious.

Shimon HaTzaddik was the one for the famous Talmud quote "The world exists on three things: the Torah, divine worship, and acts of kindness.". The Talmud says he was very righteous and inspired the people to do the same and in that period there was a spiritual high among the people of Israel. Following his death, however, the Jewish people were unable to sustain the spiritual heights which they had achieved during Shimon HaTzaddik’s lifetime. As a result, they digressed into a downward spiritual spiral from which they never recovered. This decline continued and worsened as the second Temple era continued to unfold. The Baraisa therefore relates that after the death of Shimon HaTzaddik the occurrence of these miracles became sporadic; there were some years when these miraculous signs occurred, and there were other years when they did not. This spiritual decay plunged to its lowest point during the last 40 years of the second Temple period. The Baraisa records that none of the above miracles occurred during these last four decades of the second Temple.

Hope this helps!

Many people try to make this seem like its the case as "Yeshua is the final sacrifice and G-d no longer accepts them" but that isnt the case. For a start the Bible is clear sacrifices will some day be restored in full, but forgetting that for a second, this event of the thread not turning white and the other signs etc had happened on and off long before Yeshua came. It is highly unreasonable to think that if G-d did only rely on sacrifice for atonement of sins (which he doesnt) that he would not give his people the option for atonement.

Instead if you are to believe this story since its recorded in the Talmud you have to believe its context, the Talmud says the reason was a major spiritual decline in the people since the death of Shimon HaTzaddik, there was hatred, theft and lack of righteousness, which Im sure Yeshua noticed. Its quite interesting to hear of the traditional Jewish beliefs of when the messiah is supposed to come, either when the world is very righteous (it is deserved) or when it is very evil (it is necessary), that could very well be the reason we saw Yeshua the messiah comming at the time he did and aiding those sick in HaShem.
