I am an Orthodox Christian who is testing the waters and interested in seeking God's will in starting a Tiny House community in California for Orthodox Christians. We have the land with utilities, an old farm house and 20 acres and all the free water we can use. It would need tons of work to start off. To be honest, I don't even know where to begin. I envision a community where people both old and young seek to live out there faith, pray together and help one another. We have two Orthodox Churches in town only 10 minutes away each. We have a little experience with organic farming, aquaponics, and farm animals. I will leave it at that and see what interest there might be. I know the economy is rough for many of the faithful and would love to open it eventually to those most in need.

Hello, and welcome to CF!

Please do drop by TAW to post, though we don't have a very large community, perhaps someone will know someone.

(Just click the link graphite kindly provided in post #2 above)

I would love to do something like that. We sold a little farm a few years ago and I miss it, and I do love my community, even though it's about an hour away from me. But it would be impossible for me - my husband is not Orthodox and while I'm sure he would like to go back to California, I know it wouldn't be possible as things are now.

It sounds like a great concept, and I pray it goes well for you. And please do drop by TAW. Again, welcome to CF!

Dear Anastasia, thank you for the warm welcome and encouragement! I have been the Greek Orthodox priest here for 20 years and we seem to have a large homeless population. Unfortunately such a community would not work unless it had a solid Christian core. God will bring things about according to His Will. Keep us in your prayers. God bless you.

Welcome to CF

I echo the suggestion of you coming to TAW The Ancient Way - Eastern Orthodoxand talking with folk there - you may well be surprised at the feedback you get.

Father, bless.

Thank you, I will keep your community in prayer. Are there any plans that I might be able to keep up with news?

Also I am wondering ... I understand you wish to build a community, and I well know the value of that. But especially considering the nature of your venture, and the work necessary (ah, except for light chores and doctoring sick animals, I fear I am no longer able to do the work necessary in such a community) ... but given the kind of expertise needed, and the things that could be learned - and that many people are interested in learning such skills - have you considered having a house or two available on a temporary basis? In the farming community, it was sometimes done to host a couple/family for a season, or a year or two. They would be given room and board in exchange for work on the farm, and they would gain skills and knowledge in gardening, animal husbandry, or whatever have you. The pool of potential apprentices might be much smaller among only Orthodox Christians, but there might well be enough interest. And then perhaps young people not yet married who wish to gain skills? It could even lead to permanent community members.

Anyway, just a thought. I really do like the idea, especially if led by a priest and faithful to the ideals of our faith. In fact I couldn't imagine anything better, if done right.

God be with you.

Please let me know the details... I feel God calling me to a Mobile Homeless ministry, those living in vehicles and many live in the desert area/ west coast due to all the BLM land... perhaps you could have a short stay area for them?
No details yet. Just testing the waters to see what interest there might be. I imagine it would be best to first have a solid community in place to help those who are passing on through. Thank you for your post.

Thank you Anastasia. There is an old house that I am trying to get repaired, and two large trailers that need some TLC. Your comments are valuable. I guess the question should be does such an endeavor start out with a core of those who desire to minister to our less fortunate Orthodox, or do we simply begin with the later who then become the core. Please keep us in your prayers.
