  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I had orientation today for nursing school and from what I can understand I will have no life outside of school. I start my summer classes on July 5th and we have 12 textbooks, and are attending class from 8am - 6pm and then we have to go right home to study because there are multiple tests every week.

I was wondering if anyone has any tips for time management? I'm used to 'regular' university where you go to class for 3 or so hours a day and then go home - this is gonna be totally different. I wonder - when am I going to eat? sleep? exercise? read my bible? spend time with friends? shower?

Basically all I'm doing right now is clutching my Day Planner for dear life :p

oh wow that's really time consuming. Since your under a time crunch maybe you could start your day a little earlier... maybe at 5:30am. In the morning you could do your workout reigiment, and breakfast. You could leave the studying for after class. Whatever time you have between breaks you could maybe jot down an assignments list of things to do.

I found this link so maybe it might help you... it has tips on time management: http://www.gmu.edu/gmu/personal/time.html

i think this is the way they weed out those with stomachs for this line of work. 8am - 6pm sounds like a reasonable work day for some nurches. my mom works from 6 - 2:30 most days but is constantly on call and people have frequent accidents. there are days when she did not come home til after the sun had long since disappeared and everyone else had gone to bed. she then got up to do it again a few hours later. if you can't handle it the first couple of weeks, get out or you'll only burn yourself out anyway.

Actually they told us the opposite. ;) They said that the first month is going to be the hardest thing and you will feel like quitting and runing out of the room pulling your hair out screaming by the 2nd day. But to relax, and just keep trotting along until the end.

The "weed out" process that academic institutions use often involves scare tactics.  They tell you how bad it is going to be, and yes, it is indeed tough. Manageable though! The administrators are looking for people with commitment, and they would just as soon have attrition come at the beginning of a program rather than later.  Bottom line: To focus so strongly on school at the beginning is an exercise in discipline and prioritizing. You can do it, or you would not have been selected.  School will be a priority. Notice though, that I did not say highest priority. For people who love God, He is our highest priority. God bless you. I hope you do well and enjoy this new adventure!

I had hours like that in high school believe it or not. I would get to school at 7 am for our football workout and stay throughout the day because of football in the afternoon until at least 7 pm. On Mondays it would be even harder as I would have orchestra rehearsal from 7-9. The hardest part was coming home and having at least 3 hours of homework every night. A lot of the time I would skip my quiet time or put God really aside for the day. That is something you should avoid at all costs. Even if it is just devoting time to prayer, not actually getting in the Word everyday, it is better than nothing. I know during the week it was very hard to make time for friends...but I had the weekend.

Nursing School is pretty intense :( I am not yet in school, on the waiting list :( But Hopefully within the year I'll finally be in the program!

Just working through my pre-req's I felt over loaded, and nursing classes are apparently much worse! however after the first month you'll feel as though you've slid into a routine! Honest, it gets better! It's similar to a job, with extra work outside! And it's only 2 years... (or 4 depending)

Hey, just so you know, your life isnt signed away until you join the military such as myself. I did the college thing though and i know wha tyou were talking about, trust me, you have more time than you realize you just have to find it. Just look at what you are doing and how long you are doing it, figure out what tests you have on what days, and study for the tests. Everyone new to college tends to think that it is about total retention, college is about late nights and cramming for tests. Just my personal opinion, but i say take notes durring class, cram for the test, then foget 75% of what you learned until the final then break the notes back out...thats what i did and i managed a 3.8! Also, college isnt as much knowing the material as it is knowing the teacher and what they want, if you figure out your teacher and can make them happy, you get good grades. Have fun with college, remember, you chose your major, you should love it for what it is! Good luck with your studies, i hope you do well. Just remember, you still have your life, i have no choice but to go to Iraq!!! Oh well, i love my job! God Bless, Support our troops!

Nursing school and college are a bit different! (I know they shouldn't be but they are...) With nursing school it's kind of like a mini-med school, all the health classes, and clinical stuff rolled into 2 or 3 years worth of programs! They advise students NOT to work while in nursing school.

Nursing school IS about knowing the material, as well as knowing the teacher! And you can't just forget, then cram because many times the classes do not work that way at all!

Although I do admire you greatly for serving your country! That is a noble deed, and you should be very proud of yourself!

This is very true, going to a regular university is a piece of cake compared to nursing school. None of my roomates who are attending a regular university can begin to comprehend the workload nursing students are under. It really is like medical school.

wow, that kind of makes me appreciate my schedule more. i am a music major, and while i won't pretend that it's as hard as nursing school sounds, it is time consuming. mainly b/c you've got to practice a/b 10 hours a week, and i've usually got a/b 5 classses a day, and silly me signed on to do work study. and i also have to study for my gen. eds. b/c they're kind of important :p so sometimes i don't get to sleep until 5:30 am only to get up at 7 and start over. anyways, i feel a little bit of your pain, and i'll pray for you and keep you in mind!

1 word :: Clinicals!

While I'm not studying for my RN yet (working on LPN, then going to get my RN directly after since my school offers LPN classes they don't offer to RN students) the clinicals for my LPN stuff is killer, i can't imagine my RN clinicals yet!

It may be tougher, but you make better money too! So good luck. You may have to sacrifice for a while but you can catch up on other interests later. How long does it take to graduate?

Once you get your pre reqs (takes 2 years) you start the program and have another 2 years left.
