  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why were we flying a 22 year old shuttle... Most planes are retired before that and we were too cheep to retire the Columbia, the first shuttle into space... This is why NASA needs a budget, people died because we as Americans were too cheep to build newer and better space crafts...

Sorry just had to rant...

There were 7 crew emebers, none of them survived.

Out of them were:

The first Israeli to be in space died on Hebrew Sabbath day and that is sad.......

A Woman of Indian(in Asia) descent,(Indian born and naturalized citizen,in fact),a African American, another woman and out of the 7,it was the first space flight for 4 of them.

-not too many Indians or Blacks or women are astronauts so its good to pledge them :)

Also, it was 5 days before our former President, Ronald Regan's Birthday(92nd).
and 4 days after the anniversy of the Discovery disaster, ironically also my Brithday(I just turned 21).

I hope they are all saved in heaven.

God Bless,
In Christ,

Hector

P.S. Its a little more interesting for us Texans ;)

I remember the first shuttle accident. Can't believe it has been that long.
Makes me wonder if there are many millionaire wannabe space tourists wanting to go in space right now.
I am sorry for those brave people who took the risks.
A very sad day. I was shocked to hear the news.

Lewis, Columbia was first flown in 1981, but it was obviously inspected and serviced between each launch, and after the 1986 Challenger accident, all of the remaining space shuttles were redesigned and reconstructed.

Age is not a factor, if the machine gets constant service. The battleship Missouri was commissioned before the end of the War, and it is still functional.

In my modest opinion, it must have been an unpredictable mechanical error, like the landing gear deploying early, or the trim, or something else to cause it to discintegrate.

When i heard about it this morning on the radio, the man said something like, "The space shuttle Columbia was lost over Texas today." And that was all. I thought, what kind of a cruel joke is that? It worried me until i went on Yahoo.com and confirmed it.

I have to agree with alexb00, if an aircraft is well maintained they last a long time. DC-3s that saw service in the 1940s are still flying, and B-52 bombers that were built in the 1950s are still flying on active service in the US Air Force. Right now it looks like the damage on take off was much worse than thought and they got a burn through on the left wing.

Pretty much just speculation, but a big chunk of insulation hiting the left wing and then having all of the sensor indications on the left wing just prior to loss of communication seems like to much of a coincidence.

I disagree with alexgb00.

You can't quite compare aircraft to space shuttles because :

1)First off space shuttles have only been out for 25-30 years(70's).
Aircraft has been out since the 1920's -80 years.

2)Aircraft does not have to take off and exit the earths atmosphere with huge rockets and tanks that have to dump-off.

3)Aircraft does not have to reenter the earths gravational field fallling at least 600-800 mph and run through 3000 degrees F

Yes I agree the maintainence on space shuttles is rather vital and quite effective. But history has proved time and again that with diffrent kinds of technology accidents occur and we learn from them. And thats how many improvments in vehicles have come to be.

I'd say we need better maintainence or newer shuttles, which i'm sure that will improve :)

God Bless,

Hector

Yes, MSBS. Here, it looks like the B-52 will serve the US Air Force for another quarter century, at least: http://globalsecurity.org/wmd/systems/b-52-life.htm

God bless you, man.

It is not just a matter of maintenance, it is the basic design that has been outdated for the past 15+ years.

The tiles, in their day were technical wonders but they have some nasty inherent weaknesses. They are easily damaged by vibration, not a good thing on a vehicle that has to survive an earthquake of 5.0+ just to get in the air... They have to be glued on again making them suseptable to vibration damage. We have had the ability to build heat shielding that can be bolted and glued into place for well over ten years now.

The shape of the space shuttle to was great 22+ years ago, the best we had, but it is unstable durring re-entry. We have had better designs for the shuttle that were safer, could carry more and increase survivability over 10 years ago too.

Now don't get me wrong, I do not want Nasa to stop, infact I want just the opposite. For every dollar spent on space exploration the economy increases by ten. Also if Humanity wants to survive space is the only place to go.

I want to see a manned Mars landing in my life time, I want a moon base ASAP and I want a real space station, not the joke that is up there now put up.

The incident is a disaster and I'm sorry for the people and families involved.

Space exporation does highlight just how unsuitable we are for any environment other than earth, and how perfectly man and his environment were created for each other.

These accidents do make you question the wisdom of space exploration. I'd be interested to hear comments on the justification and necessity of space exploration.

Because God made a wonderful universe.

Isn't it sad when some of God's children refuse to get out of their beds because the floor might be cold and miss out on life?

I won't even go into the dwindling natural resources of Earth or the population problems that would be solved by going other places.
