Anyone who hasn't been watching the news this morning: turn it on. The Columbia did not land as scheduled this morning, and it is thought that it was lost during re-entry. Sad news.

Seventeen years and three days from Challenger to Columbia... Dear lord...

Why were we flying a 22 year old shuttle... Most planes are retired before that and we were too cheep to retire the Columbia, the first shuttle into space... This is why NASA needs a budget, people died because we as Americans were too cheep to build newer and better space crafts...
Sorry just had to rant...

I have to agree with alexb00, if an aircraft is well maintained they last a long time. DC-3s that saw service in the 1940s are still flying, and B-52 bombers that were built in the 1950s are still flying on active service in the US Air Force.

It is not just a matter of maintenance, it is the basic design that has been outdated for the past 15+ years.
The tiles, in their day were technical wonders but they have some nasty inherent weaknesses. They are easily damaged by vibration, not a good thing on a vehicle that has to survive an earthquake of 5.0+ just to get in the air... They have to be glued on again making them suseptable to vibration damage. We have had the ability to build heat shielding that can be bolted and glued into place for well over ten years now.
The shape of the space shuttle to was great 22+ years ago, the best we had, but it is unstable durring re-entry. We have had better designs for the shuttle that were safer, could carry more and increase survivability over 10 years ago too.
Now don't get me wrong, I do not want Nasa to stop, infact I want just the opposite. For every dollar spent on space exploration the economy increases by ten. Also if Humanity wants to survive space is the only place to go.
I want to see a manned Mars landing in my life time, I want a moon base ASAP and I want a real space station, not the joke that is up there now put up.

These accidents do make you question the wisdom of space exploration. I'd be interested to hear comments on the justification and necessity of space exploration.
