Should I use a pocket New Testament?

I was handed a pocket New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs today, and it got me thinking about if not including the Old Testament is wrong. The whole Bible is the word of God, and while I know the intent of the publisher and the person who gave it to me is good, I wonder if omitting part of the Bible is problematic. Admittedly, I have a very severe clinical obsessive compulsive problem, so I may be overthinking this. Thoughts?

I really like the pocket New Testament with Psalms and Proverbs. I like how small it is and I enjoy reading it. It has the wonderful words of Christ in it. I also love the Old Testament and read that from my bigger Bible. I think it is fine to read both.

It's not an "omission." It's stuff that fits in a pocket edition. No one claims that that's whole of Scripture. Well, no publisher.

Would it be wrong to read a single verse quoted on CF?

The Gideons used to give school children here in Canada a pocket NT with the Psalms and Proverbs. I don't see anything wrong with using it, it's just not the best tool for a total Biblical exegesis.

Ironically enough, the very first Bible I ever received was a Gideons pocket Bible. They handed them out at our Catholic school.

I think you are overthinking it. If you have a complete Bible at home, and you use it, I think you are fine also using a pocket New Testament. Having the Psalms too, the prayerbook of the Church, is good, and that part should not be overlooked in your reading.

Pope Francis recommends it. But sometimes he says 'Bible', sometimes 'New Testament', sometimes 'Gospels'. I think his point is to read, particularly the words of Jesus. If a pocket Bible helps you do that, on the bus or wherever, that's probably good.

There are pocket Gospels and Acts, pocket New Testaments, pocket New Testaments with Psalms, and whole pocket Bibles. The latter end up having VERY TINY PRINT.

For a while I had a pocket NT and used it a lot. It was an old WWII Confraternity version New Testament issued to soldiers by the chaplaincy. I found it at a used book store for cheap. It finally wore out entirely and I never did get it replaced. It was like 3x5 inches and 3/4 inch thick. Very portable. I am probably finally going to get it replaced this year.

Here is another idea, perhaps a parallel one. Find a spoken Bible, one that fits with your phone or tablet, that you can listen to in your car or on walks.

I see the OT as being foundational to the NT and so did its authors. They quoted or allude to the OT thousands of times in order to support what they said and to show that they did not depart from it. In Acts 17:11, the Bereans were praised because they diligently tested everything Paul said against OT Scripture to see if what he said was true. So I would see something wrong with the attitude that only the NT is important to read for Christians, but I don't see anything wrong with recognizing a pocket Bible for what it is. Including all of the OT would be more cumbersome to fit in your pocket and it is intended for something to read while traveling, not as a study Bible. They also make pocket OT's if you are interested.

Yeah. I have seen small complete (Protestant) Bibles but the print is tiny. You can always use your phone app, which is easy to carry around but has the entire Bible.
