  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

First off, hi there everyone! :)

To give a little background on myself...
My family never was very religious, however, my mom would take me to church every once and a while when I was younger and I was baptized at age 7. I would say that I always believed in God and Jesus, but I never really thought about Christianity seriously until the past year or so (you know what I mean?) so I consider myself a new Christian. Anywho, I was wondering if it would be ok if I got baptized again. It's something I would love to do because now I'm actually a believer and my previous baptism was kind of a "whatever" type thing (if that makes sense).

Hello friend, water baptism is not necessary for salvation, as you can see from the man who died on the cross next to Jesus. In fact, Scripture says that there is One Lord and One Baptism- this is ofcourse speaking of Baptism in The Holy Spirit. However, this does not mean that people shouldnt be baptized by water, they should- but it is not a necessity to salvation. If you feel you would like to get baptized again.....Go for it! It is an outward declaration of you being born again into Christ. You can if you want, and if you don't want to...thats ok too! God Bless You!

Baptism is not something that saves you. You're not going to lose salvation by mistreating baptism. But baptism is instituted by your Savior. The issue will grow to bother you later on, if you don't pass through this time with some things settled about your prior baptism. It's likely time to sit down and hash through this with your spiritual leaders -- preferably those who don't, by foregone conclusion, baptize everyone regardless of how often they've been baptized.

Baptism isn't a sign that you've become a super-disciple. It's a sign of your faith. I think the real question is whether you thought your family had faith in the first place. Excepting Christmas/Easter Christians, it's quite a bit of effort taking a kid to church. There may have been more behind all that than it first seemed.

How you felt about the baptism also doesn't factor into it. Like signing a contract, you may not have known entirely what you were getting yourself into. But that's become clear now more than ever.

You said you believed in God and Jesus -- but your maturity in coming to Christ of your own accord now, that's a sign that God has been working in you all this time to bring you greater awareness of His love and grace. That warrants a public profession of faith and a public testimony to God's work in you.

Baptism is a one-time thing according to Scripture (Ep 4). You're essentially either denying the validity of the prior baptism, or you're asserting the superfluousness of baptism in general.

Simon the Sorcerer was not rebaptized. The adulterous man in 1 Corinthians 5 was not rebaptized. The Apostles were not rebaptized (in water) after receiving the Holy Spirit at Pentecost.

Finally, the idea that children aren't baptized is ... inconsistent with Scripture. Ephesians 6 holds instructions to children in the church. Every other group of people Paul is talking to, are people in the church. It would be odd to think these children weren't part of the church. And being part of the church in the First Century involved being baptized (Acts 2:38-40).

Hi there angelofmusicfan! :wave::angel:

I think to be babtized again would be a great thing to do if you really feel that it would be right for you!
I too have thought a little about this the recent time.
I was babtized as a child, but actually want to do it again! When I was a child it was more like a tradition. When I was a little child I wasn`t able to believe, but now I do. So, I want to take a stand for what I believe in.
As some people have mentioned, babtism isn`t neccessary to have salvation. But I think you should go for it and do it if you really feel it is right for you!:)

Good luck with your decision!

I agree. It will make you feel better, and because of why you want to do it, will also please the Lord

Go for it!

The man on the cross next to Jesus didn't need to be baptised because Jesus wasn't dead yet. And Jesus being who he is ( the SON of GOD ) can make any acceptions He wants if He so chooses. But as christians today we should stick to what the bible teaches. The NT is very clear that baptism is a part of salvation.
In Acts 2:38 Peter says, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." You receive the Holy Spirit when you are baptised. The Greek word for baptize actually means "immersion". But to get back to your question... I think that it is fine for you to be baptized again now that you actually know and understand what you are being baptized for. I actually think it is important for you to be baptized with a full understanding of the covenant that you are about to take.

I too, was baptised when I was I child as you can see on my profile. They were very well intentioned christians who thought that this was a good idear. Doing it as an adult beliver in the Lord Jesus Christ is the best bet -- it is YOU who is making a public desicion and statment of faith and cleansing of sin. I am seeking to be re-baptised as an adult too as soon I feel it is the right time.

My advise -- if you feel the time is right for you personally , go for it! You will not regret.

Baptism is not apart of salvation.

Salvation is a gift from God, and not of works, lest any man boast--Ephesians 2:8-9

If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God rose Him from the dead, you will be saved--Romans 10:9

The importance of Baptism is spoken in the Bible; but nowhere in the Bible does it say you must be baptised to receive salvation. That would go against Eph 2:8-9. But, like the Rom. verse (and many others), if you invite Jesus Christ into your heart as your Lord and Savior you will be saved.

Baptism, like Communion, is an affirmation of being joined into the family of Christ, but isn't necessary to be saved.

If you believe Jesus wants you to I would.
I remember reading a post on here about the same issue and it got me thinking. I had been baptized as a baby, but I was only saved 2 years ago. So I prayed that night about it and next day I went to my friends baptizim at the beach...at the same time I ended up getting baptized! It was awesome.
So yes, I really do think you should. It is the most amazing feeling!

At our church we have baby dedications for children under a certain age because they cannot make that choice for themselves until they are older. So I think at any age you can be baptized sure, but I think it should be a life choice that you can make for yourself and you can't do that when you don't understand what you are being baptized for. And now that you can understand and make the choice, go ahead and be baptized and may you be blessed!

I was baptized twice, once when I was young, about 10, then I was baptized into the church where I recieved membership after I rededicated my life to Christ. I believe that after you become a Christian and make the conscious decision to follow Christ it is a good thing to be baptized and make a public declaration of your faith. By no means it is going to make you look better in God's eyes and God will not love you less if you dont get baptized. Just make sure its a decision you are making for yourself to be obedient to God, not to earn "brownie points" with Him or something along those lines.

Let me offer a quick reply to what was said. On December 23, 2006, a dear friend took me to her Pastor because I had been mentioning that I wanted to accept Jesus as my Lord and Savior. I prayed with the Pastor and my friend and then accepted the Lord.

The Pastor then explained baptism and asked if I wanted to make that outward affirmation of my love for Jesus Christ. Within a few minutes, I was Baptized and felt the Holy Spirit touch every essence of my being.

Since then, I have already taken my first communion.

Make the decision that you feel is right for you, but know that with each passing second, I feel the Lord's love for me growing and intensifying and my commitment to Jesus becoming unshakeable.

Hi, I am a Lutheran, and I have a problem with a second or subsequent baptism. I believe in one baptism for the remission of sins.

However, I will state that the Lutheran church, has what is called a "reafirmation of baptism" it is part of the service where people make a public profession of faith and acknowledge their baptism.

I will also say, if you feel you are called to do so it is up to you.

my two cents worth.

Who is doing the work in baptism? It's not you since in the original language be baptized is in a passive tense. So, who is at work but God! God is the one who has attached His Word to the water in baptism. He did it right the first time! You do NOT need to get rebaptized! God hasn't made a mistake.
