  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

of how I came to Catholicism.

I was (and am being?) raised Methodist, but I changed to Agnosticism when I heard the "arguements" that prove God (which they don't, they still don't really make much sense). For the past few years I have been perfectly happy as an Agnostic. In the past few months I had felt a "spiritual pulling" to put it simply. I tried a few religions (Baha'i being one). Each one felt pretty empty. However, after going to a Mass I convinced myself that Catholicism is right. I feel God in any church I go to, but the Catholic one felt "different." More... right I guess.

That's it I guess.

But.. question: When do you make the sign of the cross besides the obvious or prescribed times? Is it normal to do it before a prayer?

Hi Dark Lite,

Welcome Home! That presence you felt is the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, kept in the Tabernacle.

The sign of the cross is frequently used before and after a prayer. We also cross ourselves using holy water upon entering a church. This is to remind us of our baptism. You are welcome to bless yourself with the holy water when you enter a Catholic church.

Welcome DL:wave:

Actually, you can cross yourself anytime you feel like it, especially before a test, driving in a snow storm or jumping off a diving board. Have you ever noticed how athletes will cross themselves before hitting the ball, or after scoring a point? It's a great witness to your faith and it's as old as the first century when Christians were being throw to the lions. I thank God He is showing you the way to Him.

Hi Dark_lite! I remembered you answering my questions in the NCS forum about Baha'i and was curious about your current spirituality. I feel much like you do, that somehow in a Catholic (and a little bit lesser extent, Orthodox) church I feel more at home. No matter what reasoning pulls me to or away from the Church, I always feel drawn here.

This is so wonderful to hear, and how the Holy Spirit can turn someone's heart around so quickly . .

As far as the sign of the cross, you can make it any time . . when you make the sign of the cross, you are blessing yourself . . you can bless yourself at any time and this is a very good thing to do. :)

Welcome home!

Peace in Him!
