  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I think most of us gun owners are on-board with at least some restrictions (to varying degrees)

View attachment 317919

Many gun owners support gun control. So why don't they speak out?

Or, perhaps you can just consider yourself fortunate enough to not have had to live or work in an area where these worries aren't just figments of someone's imagination.

But as I eluded to in the previous post, I'm okay with certain restrictions as long as there is a limiting principle (meaning we're not going to end up like London where they ended up banning knives for self-defense after the majority of guns were removed).

What would you see as the suitable alternative in terms of a defensive tool if guns weren't so widely disseminated already? Tasers, knives, brass knucks, ninja stars?

What tool should a, say, 130lbs woman have if she was in a position where she had to walk home or to her car late at night that would be effective enough to be viable self-defense against a 200lbs man?

Because obviously, if all equalizers are removed, everyone would basically be subject to the whims of the biggest, strongest, most aggressive people.

Didn't the president just sign into law a bill that will cost over a billion dollars in response to the "we need to do something" crowd? Doesn't look like it's working.

I hope your not serious.

But on a related note, we just had 4 years of trump, what did he do to fix anything?

Trump wasn't in office when the Uvaldi shooting happened and everybody was saying we need to do something.“Something” was done by Biden and the Democrats (and the Republicans) to the tune of over a billion dollars. As I predicted, another shooting would happen, and people would talk once again about "doing something”. So here we are again.

EDIT: I just checked that price tag again. It's actually 15 billion dollars. 15x what I thought, and still not "doing something" to stop mass shootings.

He had the las vegas shooting under his watch what did he do? 15 billion dollars is far better then the thoughts and prayers we only got for 4 years, plus seriously dude, it's been a few days and you think it will solve it. How well did doing nothing fix the issue?

The ATF banned “bump-stocks”, eventually.

Ummm the guy we were talking about that had many mass shootings and didn't even try to do anything trump.

Not nearly as many as now. Looks like biden not only failed with 15 billion dollars of our money to "DO SOMETHING!", but he didn't even bring unity to America.

Raising the age to buy an AR rifle to 21 was certainly made out to be a magic solution, as was all the extra mental health measures and whatever else he thought $15 billion was worth spending on. That much money should do some kind of “magic".
But considering how the shooter identified himself as a liberal, and dressed like a woman, and portrayed himself as an Antifa activist in his videos, attacked people celebrating Independence Day, and only shot white people, I can see why the coverage of this particular shooting is getting a different narrative in the MSM.

Regulations round gun ownership in America just get sillier. The age of majority here is 18yrs. We can marry fight for the country, vote. I think it is much the same in America. Yet American under-21s need a 'responsible adult' before buying a gun - no, hang on, assault rifle. If the shooter had only wanted an ordinary rifle, could he have just bought one?

Please, there is no need to try to 'explain'. It is absurd, however you look at it.

Father of July 4th parade mass shooting suspect to stand trial for assist in gun license application

His father sponsored his application, even though just months earlier a relative reported to police that Crimo III had a collection of knives and had threatened to “kill everyone.”

[The son's trial date has not been set.]

In Illinois, it's kind of surprising that they even have a provision that lets a younger person apply for a license with "sponsorship".

They've typically been notorious for having stricter-than-average rules on this subject.

I live in a purple (but more red than blue) state, and I'm not aware of any provision like that here that allows someone to get a "permission slip" from their parent to circumnavigate the minimum age for gun purchases.

'Stricter than average' is not very strict at all. 'Less lax than average' might be a better way of putting it.

Will he be charged as an accessory to murder in the event of the son being found guilty? I think he should bear a heavy responsibility for the 21 first-degree murder counts, 48 counts of attempted murder his son is facing.
60 days in jail, starting next week, and 100 hours of community service.
It seems trivial set against the crime he (allegedly) facilitated.

Probably a factor is the chronology. There was a 2.5 year gap between buying the first gun and the murders.

In the Michigan case where the gun was bought only a few days before, the parents are facing involuntary manslaughter.

Robert Crimo III, accused in July 4th parade mass shooting, backs out of plea deal in court hearing

Robert Crimo III, the man accused of opening fire from a rooftop onto Fourth of July parade revelers in Highland Park, Illinois, two years ago, killing seven people and injuring dozens, backed out of a proposed plea deal in a dramatic court hearing Wednesday.

In court, prosecutors said they and Crimo had agreed to a deal in which Crimo would plead guilty to seven murder counts and 48 counts of aggravated battery, one for each named victim in the indictment. In exchange, he agreed to be sentenced to natural life in prison, and the rest of the charges would be dismissed.

The judge then asked Crimo, who was brought into the room in a wheelchair, whether he accepted the plea deal, but he did not respond. His attorneys asked the court for a recess to discuss the deal with him further, and they then left the courtroom.

When they returned, the judge again asked Crimo whether he wished to go forward with the plea deal, and he said “No.” The judge then tentatively set a trial for February 25, 2025.
