1 How long, O LORD ? Will you forget me forever?
How long will you hide your face from me?

2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts
and every day have sorrow in my heart?
How long will my enemy triumph over me?

3 Look on me and answer, O LORD my God.
Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death;

Psalm 13

Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength,
A very present help in trouble.
2 Therefore we will not fear,
Even though the earth be removed,
And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea;
3 Though its waters roar and be troubled,
Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah

This one felt autobiographical for me. I actually felt some tears one night reading this. I stumbled across it.

(select verses)

1 Surely God is good to Israel,
to those who are pure in heart.

2 But as for me, my feet had almost slipped;
I had nearly lost my foothold.

I had lost my way. The good God was doing for others didn't seem to apply to me. I had lost my foothold. I was slipping downward into a sea of troubles.

12 This is what the wicked are like-
always carefree, they increase in wealth

I was envious of others. They seemed carefree.

16 When I tried to understand all this,
It was oppressive to me

17 till I entered the sanctuary of God;
then I understood their final destiny

There is more than this life and it's pleasures.

21 When my heart was grieved
and my spirit embittered,

22 I was senseless and ignorrant;
I was a brute beast before you

At my worst I was out of my mind and full of anger at God. I thought my sins would keep me cut off permanently from God.

24 You guide me with your counsel,
and afterward you will take me into glory.

God didn't turn his back on me though I turned my back on him. If a great man like David could have these feelings than should I be surprised an ordinary guy like me would have similar struggles.

I love Psalms. I can relate to the full range of feelings.

Psalm 18:
16 He reached down from on high and took hold of me;
he drew me out of deep waters.

17 He rescued me from my powerful enemy,
from my foes, who were too strong for me.

18 They confronted me in the day of my disaster,
but the LORD was my support.

19 He brought me out into a spacious place;
he rescued me because he delighted in me.

That's so amazing!

Not only does the Lord of heaven and earth delight in me - but He delighted in me even before He saved me!
And yet, without Jesus, He could not even look on me because of my sin.

What a glorious salvation!
What a wonderful Saviour!

Psalm 57:7 My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast;
I will sing, yes, I will sing praises!

8 Awake, my glory!
Awake, harp and lyre!
I will awaken the dawn.

9 I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the peoples;
I will sing praises to You among the nations.

10 For Your lovingkindness is great to the heavens
And Your truth to the clouds.

11 Be exalted above the heavens, O God;
Let Your glory be above all the earth.

The Psalms are certainly a good book to delve into. :thumbsup: The night that I memorized my first verse by choice was one that I'd been having nightmares. For two nights I had horrible nightmares and I was scared to go to sleep so I opened my Bible, looked up "fear" and found Psalm 23. There was no way I could memorize 6 verses in the tired state I was in so I memorized verse 4. That is my favorite verse and always will be. That night, I didn't have a nightmare and I don't think I've really had one since then either.:swoon::D

God used this Psalm to comfort and give me hope during a time of grave illness and trial. I still reflect on it sometimes in my night prayers.

Ps.88 Verses 1 to 18

[1] O LORD, my God, I call for help by day;
I cry out in the night before thee.
[2] Let my prayer come before thee,
incline thy ear to my cry!
[3] For my soul is full of troubles,
and my life draws near to Sheol.
[4] I am reckoned among those who go down to the Pit;
I am a man who has no strength,
[5] like one forsaken among the dead,
like the slain that lie in the grave,
like those whom thou dost remember no more,
for they are cut off from thy hand.
[6] Thou hast put me in the depths of the Pit,
in the regions dark and deep.
[7] Thy wrath lies heavy upon me,
and thou dost overwhelm me with all thy waves. [Selah]
[8] Thou hast caused my companions to shun me;
thou hast made me a thing of horror to them.
I am shut in so that I cannot escape;
[9] my eye grows dim through sorrow.
Every day I call upon thee, O LORD;
I spread out my hands to thee.
[10] Dost thou work wonders for the dead?
Do the shades rise up to praise thee? [Selah]
[11] Is thy steadfast love declared in the grave,
or thy faithfulness in Abaddon?
[12] Are thy wonders known in the darkness,
or thy saving help in the land of forgetfulness?
[13] But I, O LORD, cry to thee;
in the morning my prayer comes before thee.
[14] O LORD, why dost thou cast me off?
Why dost thou hide thy face from me?
[15] Afflicted and close to death from my youth up,
I suffer thy terrors; I am helpless.
[16] Thy wrath has swept over me;
thy dread assaults destroy me.
[17] They surround me like a flood all day long;
they close in upon me together.

[18] Thou hast caused lover and friend to shun me;
my companions are in darkness. (RSV) :pray:

Psalm 22:3 But You are holy,
Enthroned in the praises of Israel.
4 Our fathers trusted in You;
They trusted, and You delivered them.
5 They cried to You, and were delivered;
They trusted in You, and were not ashamed.
