  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A friend (not very close) wants to borrow a book that I have (she's thinking about buying the same book). This book is study guide of sorts, so I've answered questions with my personal feelings and thoughts and the same with the prayers I've written in the book. I'm not comfortable with letting her use the book, as I've written my personal thoughts in there. If I tell her no, she will take it personal, not sure if what to do. Should I just trust her and let use it?

I see no point in these books anyway. What's it good for to write prayers down in them? This is the typical commercial christian stuff which nobody really needs but everybody thinks he must use those books where you write down thoughts and prayers. Do you later on check how many prayers didn't get answered or what's this good for?

Your boundaries are for you to define and defend. If you don't feel comfortable sharing your deepest personal thoughts and prayers with someone "who isn't very close", then simply say the things you've written are of a personal nature so you're not free to lend the book out. If she takes that personally, then that shows you were very wise not to expose your inner self to her.

It's good to help people, but we also have to keep a healthy self respect, or else we'll do no one, leastwise ourselves, any good.

sam7, thanks for your response. Many of these books have been very helpful for me. Yes, I agree a lot of it is just commercial stuff, however, without it helpful when I go back and see how He's answered my prayers, and just to see the places where I've grown. Also, I'm the type that won't just sit down and study, I need a plan to follow, so depending on the type of book it is, it will provide a guide for me to study.
