read AND write, shernren. In my case, i used to read a lot but .. well, now i need to get writing.

Chinese saying: Read until you've broken a thousand scrolls, then you will write as if you were a god.

there's also another chinese saying: to study/read a thousand books, it's better to walk a thousand miles. (walk for real life experience)

Well stated, sir! If you read quality writing, it raises your own standards. If you keep reading B novels, you miss the joy. I hope this doesn't sound elitist -- after spending time as an English major, it isn't enough for me that a book have a good plot: I need to admire the way the word hits the page, too.

I think the most important way to improve your writing is to read a lot.

I used to think I was a good writer a few years back. I kept thinking that until late last year...the incident that changed me was reading Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy. Then I realised that I'm very, very small on the writing ladder.... Read lots and you will write better.

Hey I've written tons, and I'm sure most people at writers' write a lot too. But sometimes the problem is that we write in the wrong way, and the more we write "wrong" the more wrong we will become as writers. So we need good books that, when we see our stuff against that, will show us just what we have to do.
