“problems could be dealt with more effectively if U.S. presidents didn’t have to worry so much about Congress or the courts.”

43% of Republicans agreed with this, compared with just 14% in 2016.

For conservative Republicans, the situation is even more extreme. A majority of them agree with the statement, and this support for an authoritarian president has doubled in the past year, while more moderate Republicans have not changed their views much.

That's truly frightening. I will say this again... thank God for the Checks and Balances set up within the federal government. I shudder to think what Trump and his regime would try to get away with if they weren't constrained by the balance of power. According to the poll results, it's obvious neither Trump or the majority of conservative Republicans respect the balance of power in the government.

It sounds like your Republicans are pining for either a monarchy or a dictatorship.

Interesting. And yet Jay Sekulow and the ACLJ used to routinely complain in donation-seeking mail to me about how then-president Obama was acting too much like an "emperor" instead of a U.S. President in giving so many Executive Orders ....

... Or was it acting like a "monarch", they said?

Barack Obama was acting fully within his power to sign all those exective orders. There is no limit on how many a President can make. Donald Trump OTOH is doing everything he can to abuse the power of office.

Trump's authoritarian leanings are no surprise. A few years ago, I might have been surprised by Republicans following him down that path, but as I've watched his actions sink to new depths and their support never waver, them agreeing that authoritarianism is OK is pretty much expected.

If a Democrat takes the Presidency, you can expect a dramatic reversal on how Republicans feel about executive power.

I don't like to see this trend, but it's foolish not to recognize that when the Democrats in Congress made it clear that they would not cooperate on anything of importance because that might reflect well on the president as one who had some successes in office, the Republicans naturally were forced to find other ways to get national problems and needs addressed.

Maybe some Republicans will spout off about wanting that Democratic president to be a one-term president like Mitch McConnell said about Obama back in 2010. He said, “The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president" (source).

Yep, it is not like the Republicans controlled The House, The Senate, AND The Presidency for two years and couldn’t get anything done. Wall? NO! Obamacare replacement with a better plan? NO! Hillary still walking around free? YES!

Do firing Mike Flynn and getting Paul Manafort arrested count?

Otherwise, how's that infrastructure bill coming?

I said it before: we need a strong-man president unhindered by congressional oversight and judicial scrutiny.

    Unchain Trump!

Further, we need one party only. Cut loose liberal Dem traitors. Look at Russia. Look at China. Their stars are rising!

It's happening before the next Democratic president has been elected. We're already seeing cries of moral indignation about Joe Biden's alleged inappropriate behavior while they passionately insist that they didn't vote for Trump because he was a choir boy and they voted for a president, not a pastor. They have no qualm whatsoever about pointing the sins out of Joe Biden or any other Democrat, but they will use excuse after excuse of why they don't hold Trump's sins against him. It basically comes down to him pandering to conservative political agendas and kissing up to evangelical Christians.

I don't take any of their public displays of moral indignation about some Democrat's immoral behavior or against LGBT and gay rights seriously. I don't listen to them because they have spent the last three years loyally supporting and defending a twice divorced thrice married adulterer and womanizer. If the moral character of our national leaders, including the President, genuinely mattered to these religious conservatives, then Trump wouldn't be their champion president. They wouldn't have spent the last three years passionately defending him. I don't care what excuses they use to justify supporting him.

Oh stop already with the regime nonsense! How do you have a regime with various of Trump's team of a few different names being indicted for crimes and facing jail time? That's some regime! Yet on the other hand you have another party of group which seemingly have got away with everything and the heart of America is crying out for justice and NOTHING has been done. Perhaps you should reconsider just where a regime can be seen?
