It's tucked into his feathers to keep it warm. That's what they do when they perch. They switch which foot they stand on, so they can stay warm.

That is an EPIC picture of a hawk!!! I wish Paulie079 were here to identify it... But I think it looks like a Sharp-shinned Hawk.

It could be! I made the same mistake when I posted a picture of a hawk a few months ago. Paulie said it was a red-tailed and I thought it was a sharp-shinned.
