  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

"It is a prodigious mistake for us to think that we can have a reservoir of truth, filled once for all, and that without further effort, it will supply our needs all our days. If we ever think that we have attained to sufficient knowledge and can afford to rest upon our lees, we have already, at least in part, become the victims of the conceit that is Satan's deceit. It is only as we constantly replenish our minds and refresh our souls with the pure Word of God that we shall continue on the path of straight thinking and therefore of true orthodoxy!"

Last week I picked up John Piper's God's Passion for His Glory. It is Piper's introduction to Jonathan Edwards' The End for which God Created the World. The first half is Piper's comments on Edwards and his writing, and Piper's personal journeys involving Edwards' writing. The second half is the complete text of Edwards' The End for which God Created the World, including Piper's notes on the text. Great stuff!! This is from Piper's footnotes on what Piper considers the key text:

I would encourage the reader to wrestle earnestly with this truth: “That the moral rectitude of…God CHIEFLY consists in a regard to HIMSELF, infinitely above his regard to all other beings.” This is a continental divide in theology. If you really believe this, all the rivers of your thinking run toward God. If you do not, all the rivers run toward man. The theological and practical implications are innumerable. Settling this issue is worth many nights of prayer and many months of study.

The bold is the Edwards text on which Piper is commenting, and it is so important in Piper's opinion that he considers the two paragraphs around it to have been "emormously important in (his) understanding of reality."

I was going through some old Tabletalk magazines and found this gem:

On the "What Would Jesus Do?" slogan: "Of course, the problem with this slogan is not the question -- it is a fine question. The difficulty is that we do not answer it biblically. We ask the question, but then the biblical answer comes back that just about now He would make approximately 150 gallons of fine Merlot wine for the wedding guests. We ignore this answer as being inconvenient for our traditions, and say that of course the Jesus 'we know' would never, ever drink alcohol. This is because we do not know Him according to His Word." -Doug Wilson

Justice being taken away, then, what are kingdoms but great robberies? For what are robberies themselves, but little kingdoms? The band itself is made up of men; it is ruled by the authority of a prince, it is knit together by the pact of the confederacy; the booty is divided by the law agreed on. If, by the admittance of abandoned men, this evil increases to such a degree that it holds places, fixes abodes, takes possession of cities, and subdues peoples, it assumes the more plainly the name of a kingdom, because the reality is now manifestly conferred on it, not by the removal of covetousness, but by the addition of impunity. Indeed, that was an apt and true reply which was given to Alexander the Great by a pirate who had been seized. For when that king had asked the man what he meant by keeping hostile possession of the sea, he answered with bold pride, “What thou meanest by seizing the whole earth; but because I do it with a petty ship, I am called a robber, whilst thou who dost it with a great fleet art styled emperor.”

"If religious books are not widely circulated among the masses in this country, I do not know what is going to become of us as a nation. If truth be not diffused, then error will be. If God and His Word are not known and received, the devil and his works will gain the ascendancy. If the evangelical volume does not reach every hamlet, the pages of a corrupt and licentious literature will. If the power of the gospel is not felt throughout the length and breadth of this land, anarchy and misrule, degradation and misery, corruption and darkness will reign without mitigation or end."—Daniel Webster

It is easy to love the people far away. It is not always easy to love those close to us...Bring love into your home for this is where our love for each other must start.

"The new birth is entirely the work of God, and a man has been saved, generally, for a long time before he has the remotest idea of the nature of what has happened to him by the grace of God alone." -- D. Barnhouse
