I.

THOU hast made me, and shall Thy work decay ?
Repair me now, for now mine end doth haste ;
I run to death, and Death meets me as fast,
And all my pleasures are like yesterday.
I dare not move my dim eyes any way ;
Despair behind, and Death before doth cast
Such terror, and my feeble flesh doth waste
By sin in it, which it towards hell doth weigh.
Only Thou art above, and when towards Thee
By Thy leave I can look, I rise again ;
But our old subtle foe so tempteth me,
That not one hour myself I can sustain.
Thy grace may wing me to prevent his art
And thou like adamant draw mine iron heart.

"God created the tongue for the purpose of expressing thought, in order that we might be able to communicate with each other. Consequently, it is a perversion of God’s order to pommel the air with a confused sound that cannot be understood."
--John Calvin, concerning unscriptural speaking in tongues
Treatises Against the Anabaptists and Against the Libertines, pp. 156

'The duty of the Church is to correct the spirit of the age, and in proportion as a Church becomes infected by the spirit of the age or the spirit of the city, she loses her power to do her work. Her work is to be in fellowship, in partnership with Jesus Christ and to do His mighty work.'

True spiritual obedience is impartial. A renewed heart does not pick and choose from God's commandments: the man who does so is not performing God's will, but his own! Make no mistake upon this point; if we do not sincerely desire to please God in all things, then we do not truly wish to do so in anything. Self must be denied; not merely some of the things which may be craved, but self itself! A willful allowance of any known sin breaks the whole law.(Jam 2:10-11)

"A good deal of the penetrating power of Calvinism depends upon its intellectualism. The Calvinist knows what he believes, and why he believes it."

The birth of Jesus is the grandest light of history, the sun in the heavens of all time.
It is the pole-star of human destiny, the hinge of chronology, the meeting-place of
the waters of the past and the future.

When you take up the roll of his earthly lineage and begin to read it through, you will
be struck with the fact that there are but few women mentioned in it; and yet three
out of those mentioned were harlots, so that even in his lineage there was the taint
of sin, and a sinner’s blood would have run in his veins if he had been the true son of
Joseph; but inasmuch as he was begotten by the Holy Ghost, who overshadowed the
Virgin, in him was no sin; yet his reputed pedigree ran through the veins of sinners

We have no superstitious regard for times and seasons. Certainly we do not believe
in the present ecclesiastical arrangement called Christmas: first, because we do
not believe in the mass at all, but abhor it, whether it be said or sung in Latin or in
English; and secondly, because we find no Scriptural warrant whatever for observing
any day as the birthday of the Saviour; and, consequently, its observance is a
superstition, because not of divine authority.

Even in the pursuit of really good matters of policy, do you know any Christian man
who goes into politics who is the better for it? If I find such a man, I will have him
stuffed if I can, for I have never seen such a specimen yet. I will not say, do not
attend to politics; but I do say, do not let them spot you.

“For though we very truly hear that the kingdom of God will be filled with splendor, joy, happiness and glory, yet when these things are spoken of, they remain utterly remote from our perception, and as it were, wrapped in obscurities, until that day”

- John Calvin

Praise God for us not seeing Him yet, until we come to glory with Him, that we may worship Him forever in the presence of His glory. Amen.

I can't wait 'til that day.

To the glory of God,

Randy

This one by Calvin is a gem.
