Shamish/Sun?

I am a christian as far as beleiving that Jesus is my lord and savour ie I beleave in the same God as Abraham,Issac and Jacob.
" My brother is visiting me now in Norway and he told me that The earlier words used in the old testament may be pertaining to the sun as our provider and not the son as christians beleive. he also mentioned something about how people worshiped the sun itself as a god, ie songod and then later on adopted God instead. Of course he did admit that there might ba a God that is back the creation of the sun? I have been a christian most of my life. I could choose to ignore this, but it has risen my curiosity. Any light you may have in this area would be greatly appreciated

"Son" and "sun" have no linguistic connection in Hebrew. Just because they sound the same in English doesn't mean it's significant. In hebrew the words are "ben" and "samash" - see, no connection. Now, it is true that people have worshiped the sun in ancient times. The Egyptians were notorious for their veneration of the sun god they called "Ra" or "Amun".

Shemesh/shams the sun God. there was also the moon god, But it seems to be refering to the sun and the moon. Not God the son? There was also Adad and so on and on and on. Not all the Gods they refer to were related to Shemesh though. Personaly I still beleave we have a god. But where God is based on human understanding and history remains a blur and I guess will be for a long time to come

As was said, the linguistic similarity between sun and son only is a peculiarity of English, but we get the idea of Jesus as Son of God from Hebrew via Greek where that confusion is simply not possible.

Additionally, the idea of Son of God in Hebrew had nothing to do with divinity originally - it's a title for Israel and hence for Israel's annointed representative King (eg David).

I mean "the idea that this guy - Jesus of Nazareth (who has just died and risen) - is son of God"
