  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sgt. Bergdahl was held by the Afghan Taliban for 5 years. He was released in exchange for 5 terrorists who had been imprisoned at Guantanamo Prison.
Of course, there are some Republican politicians who are complaining about this - but the sad fact is, they will complain about everything that this President does - even bringing an American soldier home.
John McCain knows first hand what it is like to be held prisoner - beaten and tortured. You would think that he would appreciate the fact that this American soldier was brought home.

That's totally unfounded, since they don't complain half enough considering the damage he wreaks, and the complaints they do make are perfectly legitimate. Do you have any comment on WHY they are complaining, or just throwing out nasty barbs?

I see the politicians are already milking this. My facebook is already flooded with conservative and right wing pictures and commentary[from such web sites dedicated to conservatives and right wingers] demonizing the man. I don't have any hardcore liberal democrat friends, but I'm sure the other end of the spectrum is saying something else.

He will be promoted to staff Sergeant.

The army isn't political.[as in democrat or republican or whatever] His chain of command decided he should be promoted. So what?

The army is political as in the good ole' boy system. I'm sure commanders and NCOs would love any bullet regarding a POW in their OER/NCOER to advance their career. He has two army schools to go through to keep that rank, and a whole lot of online courses to also keep that rank. The army became a lot stricter in getting and keep rank before I got out in December and his POW status doesn't mean jack if he fails to meet the standard in the new downsizing and pre-war level standards army.

Except that Sen. McCain has a far better grasp on the implications of this "exchange" than you do.

And had the exact, down to the most minute detail, word for word, exchange happened under Bush, you would have said nothing? Um ok.

They should complain since the President broke the law by agreeing to deal without informing Congress as required.

...and Congress would have done NOTHING but complain. They have done NOTHING for 5 and a half years.
Neither has our Marxist president. Oh, except for continuing a faltering economy, lying about unemployment, inflation, QE, while attempting over the objections of Congress and the people to institute a socialist form of government, starting with a miserable failure of a "healthcare" program.

Just a minor point here that separates John McCain from Bergdahl.

John McCain didn't desert his post in Vietnam and walk into enemy territory after posting a Tweet about how much he hated America.

The story shouldn't be that "some" Republicans are complaining, but that impeachment proceedings aren't underway as a result.

John McCain, as much as I can't stand him as a politician, was a stand up guy as an officer. Because of his father's prominence, he had several opportunities to be released, but refused to leave his men.

I'm not sure it's a fair comparison to compare him to a Taliban sympathizing deserter.

Second, does the release of this prisoner justify the violation of a law that Obama, himself, signed? And, if so, what, then, doesn't justify the violation of the law?
