What is the purpose of sex (as opposed to the asexual reproduction which we see in simple creatures)? Sex DOUBLES the cost of maintaining populations. In other words, amongst asexual creatures, each creatures needs to have one offspring to keep population size together; the cost is basically one. For creatures which use sexual reproduction, each creature needs to be involved in procreating TWO like creatures, i.e. the cost is DOUBLED!!

The mathematics behind evolutionism says that increasing this genetic cost just a few percentage points will doom a species.....

The question is, what benefit could there possibly be to sexual reproduction that it would ever have evolved (if you believe in evolution ) or, equivalently for the more enlightened, why would a creator have created such a thing?

Most of the material I see claims that there is no clear answer to this one. I claim that there is and that it should be fairly obvious. Worst case on the planet is Saudi Arabia:

That's just from large numbers of people marrying cousins. Imagine how bad it would be if the absolute same genetic profile simply kept on reproducing ITSELF???

As I see it, the purpose of sex is to prevent genetic mutations from driving complex species to extinction within a few generations. This is why there seems to be all the trouble with bacteria mutating all over the place; doesn't seem to be a problem for bacteria but it would destroy a complex species.

But, WAIT!! Aren't mutations supposed to be the driving mechanism of evolution itself?? What's wrong with this picture and with a theory which tries to explain our entire biosphere with mutations??

Splitting your sexual duties into two different entities frees up half the population to do things like hunt and protect while the other half can dedicate itself to raising young without needing to do these things (or doing them a lot less)

Works great with social species

Non-social species have it a bit harder, since they don't benefit by having the second partner playing hunter/defender while they raise their young (think most big cats).

Edit: How did I forget the even BIGGER thing? Asexual species simply replicate their DNA, meaning the offspring have the same DNA as the parent.

Those who need to members of different sexes to reproduce end up producing offspring with mixed DNA from both parents. The traits get jumbled, which can give the offspring an advantage over their parents (though it can also give them a disadvantage, or they could even have no advantage or disadvantage).

Abstinence is a terrible way to teach kids about sex. Better to have sex education be frank and honest, so that sex doesn't become this naughty thing no one knows about. What's going to entice kids more? The big adult taboo, or the thing everyone knows about? Which are kids more likely to explore: the closed door that says "NO ENTRY, AWESOME THINGS BEYOND", or the open door that contains no mysterious, titillating secrets?

One can have comprehensive sex ed and also have abstinence taught above all things, as well. Because, hey, abstinence IS the best way to avoid getting an STD (besides also not using used needles, etc), best way to avoid getting pregnant, etc. But at least in this situation, the kids know how to use protection if they decide to do it anyways... instead of coming out with a horrible disease or a child they did not want in the first place.

I was in the leading edge of this s_x education in school, and had to read out loud from a pamphlet detailing womens' breasts.

My parents, thankfully, got me excused from that class.

Domestic violence isn't inevitable, but teenagers having sex pretty much is, so your analogy doesn't work.

A similar situation is that heroin addicts. They exist, and for the time being there's not a lot we can do (we can't force them into rehab, as that will cure next to nothing). But a short-term action is to distribute clean needles, so that at least they're safer, so that at least they aren't spreading disease. It's a pragmatic solution to a difficult problem.

Likewise, teenagers and sex. There's basically no way to drive teenage sex out of society, short of chastity belts for all and sundry. Even worse, 'abstinence-only' education just makes sex into some enticing mystery to explore; there's a reason teens who pledge abstinence have sex as often as those who don't. Teens are gonna have sex. So would you rather they get STDs and abortions, or simply use condoms?

This isn't just rhetoric, as this is going on right now in your schools. American kids are being given a terrible sexual education, and the result is teenagers with STDs and pregnancies, all because no one told them how to use a condom. There's a reason the US' teen pregnancy and STD rates are so much worse than in Europe (source).
