  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is there a sewing thread?

I am looking for some advice on purchasing a pattern.

My daughter is 5 and we attend all the football games b/c my husband works with the youth. She has outgrown her old cheerleading uniform and I need some advice on purchasing a pattern...like "where" for starters.

All the ones I have looked out on-line just pull up patterns from the 70's!!!

LOL! I thought you were asking about sewing thread: you know, like is Mettler's better than Koban, and is silk-finish cotton really worth the extra cost!

Simplicity, Butterick, and McCalls have pattern catalogues online. I know at least one of them has a cheerleading costume that's current, but it looks pretty old-fashioned. I have some patterns from New Look for dancewear, which is more similar to modern cheerleading costumes, I think.

Actually, I didn't have a clue that 5-year-olds did cheerleading, or what kind of costumes are appropriate nowadays. Cheerleading isn't really a Canadian "thyang". My daughters saw a cheerleading practice at the local high-school when we were visiting down in the States and were as fascinated to watch as they were watching the Lion-dancers in Chinatown or the drummers at the Tsitsika pow-wow, or any other strange and exotic alien custom LOL!

Maybe if you describe the look that you're after, I can be a little more use to you!

Hi! I was a cheerleader for many years (starting at age 8 and ending when I was a senior in high school). My mom made my uniforms when I little and I think she used ice skating costumes for some of them. Maybe those will be easier to find than cheerleading costumes. I have seen costumes in the big 3 books (McCall's, Simplicity, and Butterick).

Hope that helps -- good luck and let us know how it turns out. Cheerleading is really a fun activity and it will make it much easier to move into public speaking later in life.

Hugs,
