  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

That is how I look at "prayer" . I didn't want to reply to the OP because the quote seemed very religious and looking at prayer as a one-way concept . When prayer is two-way communication , there is no need to fear getting it wrong because He will let you know from His side what to do and what not to do .

Personally, I thought the quote was insightful. :)

God knows we are selfish, terribly so sometimes... thats no excuse but I dont think it is any surprise to Him.. sometimes in prayer I do go to God saying I need you, I need to know you love me and that you know/care that I'm hurting in this and that I need your presence God, and He does comfort and then it does become about Him because He is so wonderful and His love is unfailing and then you honestly do want it to be about Him and prayer does become about Him.

I'm not particularly happy that that is the way it is sometimes but He designed us to have a God shaped hole as they say and only He can fill it

Maybe it is a growth process too.. the more God meets us the less it becomes about ourselves. I also know I'm in a painful space currently so maybe that is why it is what it is for this season.

SO RIGHT!!

Before I got to really know the Lord, and that meant listening to what He had to say to me instead of trying to just tell Him what I thought, the opening statement would have seem fine and insightful. Yet after a number of years of having regular conversations with Him, the OP does seem very religious and the same old stuff I expect to hear from the pulpit.

I'm not trying to be judgemental, but rather I can't help but scratch my head wondering how someone could preach every Sunday about a personal relationship with the Lord and not realize that it is actually possible to have a real personal relationship like you would with a good friend. And He really is the only "Good" friend that you can really have. And you can't hide anything from Him.

So you might as well tell Him how you honestly feel and what you actually want, even if you know if you know your thoughts aren't the best. Since we are people, we will talk to Him about self serving things, but He is not a computer that just gives you what you want. He is an all knowing God, that wants to have a conversation with you.
