  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but I have yet to find the search function here on CF...

Who on here has some plans to attend a service academy? And for those who have attended a service academy, would you do it again given the choice?

I'm planning on applying the the US Air Force Academy this Spring and if I don't get into there I'd consider the US Naval Academy and AFROTC.

I went to the Citadel and am now in the USAF. While the Citadel is less competitive than the Academies, it is just as capable and arguably harder on discipline because of lighter restrictions on training techniques and greater tradition. (The Academies are attempting to expunge their traditional practices because of the harshness.)

Would I do it again? In a minute! I loved the discipline. It changed my life.

I considered going to USMA and USNA and was about two weeks away from USMA when I changed my mind. My younger sister also decided to go to USMA and went through plebe summer and spent a semester there. I am now glad that I decided not to go.

She never once experienced harassment for being female. The more senior cadets haze the plebes like crazy. From what she has told, I think it borders on abuse. I'm proud of her though, one day she told a "sergeant" (Either juniors or seniors, I can't remember) not to cuss at her anymore. He was shocked and didn't know what to say.

The line was drawn one night at dinner. Another one of these "sergeants" arbitrarily decided that her table would not eat that night. She had no authority whatsoever to withhold food from other cadets. The academy gave this "sergeant" a slap on the wrist for her actions.

At this point my sister decided that college should not be a place of abuse and harassment just because she is younger than the other students. She left and has never looked back.

It is my opinion that the academy needs to do major restructuring when it comes to their command. No one needs to be abused in the name of tradition. It is really sick and disgusting when you think about it.

I personally recommend that you go the ROTC route. You'll have a lot more freedom and a lot more fun. The real military is nothing like the academies, so don't feel like you're missing out on something.
