Serum Lithium and Thyroid function tests...

I'm going to get my Lithium levels tested soon...possibly early next week.

I'm having the Serum Lithium and the thyroid function tests done. Anyone have experience with those tests and their outcomes?

How soon are the results returned and what do the results entail generally? What do they tell you?

What if they're too high...what then?

Any info on these tests and their significance would be appreciated.

Most blood work, Including this your doctor has the results in a few days. If Lithium levels are too high they will decrease your dosage some. Thyroid function, I flow you would be prescribed a thryoid supplement, if high, there are treatments for that as well. But remember, there could be no problem at all and things will go on the same with followup blood work as your doctor oredrs.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroid disease when I was 10. I had all the symtoms but a doctor never even thought of testing me to see why I always felt so sick; I was beginning to think I was just imagining things. I had stopped growing because my thyroid levels were so low, but thankfully my doctor finally decided to test me and we got the problem fixed. Some people end up getting a goider (http://www.endocrineweb.com/goiter.html) and I actually started developing one about one year ago. You can't see it and my doctor is the only one who can feel it, so it must not be that bad.
Obviously you're having symtoms of thyroid disease or you wouldn't be getting your levels tested. If your levels are too high you would probably be diagnosed with hyperthyroid disease (http://thyroid.about.com/library/howto/hthyperthyroidism.htm). Your doctor should have the results in a few days (although it takes 1 week to 2 weeks for my doctor to get my results).
