• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Could not tolerate Seroquel... I got something like "Restless Leg Syndrome" which drove me up the wall. When I did fall asleep - I slept way too much and did not sleep well - felt drugged all day. Miserable.
Oh yeah! I'm glad you mentioned that RLS. I get it, too. But, once I get used to a certain dosage, it stops, but once my dosage went up, it came back again. It's not as bad as it was, but I still experience it. It is a bummer :preach:

I'm on a low dose of it 50mg at night. Works great for me otherwise I get all jittery, irritable, no sleep and then comes the odd itching that's all in my head. oh and a tip for having it work quicker for sleep eat something with it for some reason it makes the sleepiness happen faster.

I have been taking Depakote for seven years first at 1500 mg now at 1000 mg. I have been told I will not have liver problems ever at this low dosage, I just am careful to not take tylenol for any pain issues because that might make my liver work too hard, or harder than it should.

I have taken Risperdole, Zyprexa, Seroquel, Abilify and now Geodon for my symptoms of schizophrenia. It was because of my weight gain that my psychiatrist kept changing my meds every year. They all controlled my symptoms totally, except with abilify I would hear a voice call my name in the morning on occasion. I remeber with Seroquel, I slept a lot. I would take it at night before 12:00 am, like ten pm or something, and I would sleep till ten am or not even get out of bed till 1:00 pm on some days, it was the seroquel that did that.

With Geodon I am awake more, but I can't help but wonder if I get manic at night and that is why I don't fall asleep until 5:00 am some nights. However I am losing weight, and I work from 3:00 pm till 12:30 am so my work totally fits with this life style which is good.

Sincerely,

Thomas

I consider myself to be an "expert" on meds for bipolar. I have been treated for this disease for approximately ten years. I have taken depakote (zombie land), lithium (hospitalized for poisoning), wellbutrin (no response whatsoever), paxil (okay, but led to mania), zoloft (like taking placebo), zyprexa (great but weight gain), symbyax (even better, but weight gain), prozac (no no for bipolar without mood stabilizer), effexor (no effect at all), carbamazapine (lost time), trazodone (too sleepy), lamictal (again nothing), abilify (WAY to freaking expensive) and am now taking seroquel.

I get extremely tired with the seroquel, but the trade off is worth it. This is the best medication I have been on (in my opinion). I am suprised at the comments about weight gain. I have lost 15 pounds on this medication. (I did well on the symbyax too, but gained weight... and I am really sensitive about this issue which fuels my depression). The zoloft is like water to me, no benefit, no drawback. Maybe it will work for you.

Hi :)
I have been on Seroquel for 12 months and feel great, I havn't been manic for two years now. I currently take 400mg and it gives me a good night sleep. The only problem I have found is after a few months at 300mg I could no longer get to sleep so had to up my dose.

Thanks for the input as I am just starting to figure out which to choose. Sounds like you certainly have some experience with the different meds. Seroquel is one I am taking a close look at. When you say you get extremely tired, could you be more specific? It would be helpful. Thanks

My experience with seroquel was not fun. I ended up basically blacking out on my kitchen floor.
I hit the floor and all the small sounds of like the fridge running and clocks ticking grew very loud. They all started to slow down real bad. I thought I was dying or my body was shutting down.
I managed to get up and run to my bed...
I didn't take it any more after that.

Basically, I take the medication at bed time, and when I wake up in the morning I'm tired, like I was out too late. I live in the Texas panhandle and we had a tornado scare. We normally go to a friend's storm cellar. I had taken my seroquel about an hour prior to having to go over there and I was having a hard time staying awake (though storms don't stress me out... so don't take this as you're going to be incapacitated in stressful situations). It's like taking benadryl. Is that a better explaination? Let me know if you want more. :)

me and my boyfriend both take lexapro, depakote and seroquel.

He is beginning to think the seroquel is triggering depression for him. Has anyone here ever experienced this? I thought seroquel was supposed to treat the depression. Is it more for mania? What exactly does it do? He tends to experience depression during the summer months, so, if seroquel is supposed to bring you down from mania, maybe the seroquel is exacerbating his suseptability to summer depression. Anyone here experience this?
