  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The rules are simple: quote a line or summarize a thought you recently heard in a sermon you heard delivered in person. Not on the net.

On the centrality of Christ in missions and preaching, in remaining faithful to the Bible:

"We don't have a band or fancy children's programing...but we do have the word of God; Baptism [and the Lord's Supper]..." and that is enough. (Henry Bartsch, June 23rd evening service at Trinity ARP Church)

The whole sermon was excellent and we were blessed to hear it.

Haha, no, I hardly ever take notes. If the sermon is really good I'll listen to it again and jot down notes or if a particular point strikes me I'll write it out. For the most part I just sit and listen, flip through my Bible or look through the hymnal. It depends.

Excellent preaching tonight at Trinity. Dr. Joseph Pipa, president of Greenville Presbyterian Theological Seminary, delivered a sermon from Psalm 90.

"It's that terrifying expectation of judgement that causes even the atheist to fear death."

"He is endless in His life and existence. He is a safe dwelling place."

"God has no beginning therefore he is the beginning of all things."

"Because of our frailty in sin we must find our resting place in God."

"He is the fountain of life and we find our life in Him."

"Learn to pray 'God teach me to number my days'

"The great alchemist transforms those things (our sins, misfortunes) by His loving mercy." (for our good)

After the evening service last Lord's Day we had a 3 hour discussion about various theological topics. One brother brought up the common practice of Reformed folks today,

"to approach the biblical text through the Puritans rather than arriving at the conclusion of the Puritans via the text."

The error becomes apparent. We no longer practice biblical theology but historical theology.

Yours in the Lord,

j
