• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Seratonin is neurotransmitter in the brain, that, when low/not working right causes depression. Many bipolars have problems with depression and taking antidepressants (self included) so I'm always on the lookout for anything that can help.
Of course, this won't have anything near the effect that an antidepressant will and it won't pull someone out of a depressant funk, but any little bit helps.
Eating processed sugars has an adverse effect on brain chemistry, from what I've been told.

Sugar is definitely one of those chemicals that blindsides a person. It has a temporary effect of causing a person to "feel good" but it is brief, because once it leaves the bloodstream, it causes a sudden drop. The best thing a person can do for their diet is to eat a balanced diet with complex carbs, like high fiber foods, and fresh fruits and veggies, if available. Good proteins, low in fat are also recommended. That, combined with regular cardio exercise can help keep blood sugar levels stable and contribute to an overall feeling of well-being.

Unfortunately, I work in a psychiatric hospital where the diet is less than desirable. High in simple carbs and fats, not a lot of whole grains, and not a lot of fresh fruits and veggies. The regular snacks are high in sugars too, like Nutrigrain bars and fruit drinks. It just saddens me to see this, especially in patients who are taking certain meds that are known to cause weight gain to begin with.

Sorry to babble. I am going to try that shake though. It sounds yummy.

Not realted to serotonin per say, but just info

FYI For any taking GABA, 5-HTP or Theanine-these are all amino acids precursors and should be taken in more than one dose per day, so that you have an ongoing supply, rather than a once a day peak. Per my pdoc BTW my pdoc said all three help with anxiety. I have been taking all but GABA and added GABA this week.
