• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

first thing I do is tactfully tell everyone I've got Aspergers. If anyone is curious, I hand out a business card that explains Aspergers. Then If things get too loud, I can put these big, black ear protectors on my head. They are electronic and have a volume control so I don't get sensitized. The ear phones indicate that I can't tolerate the sound level and people can't get [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse]ed off at me.

I experience the same things that you experience. I also suffer from keratoconus, which means that I do not see very well.

Before I go into crowds, I pray. I spend a lot of time praising God and thanking Him for what He has done for me. Then I do some relaxation techniques (deep breathing, etc.).

I do not have any friends to hold on to but I ask Jesus to guide me. He is my faithful friend.:p

Well i can just cope on my own (i even went to the states by myself - made sure that i had planned out each day i was there well).

But i prefer the company of one or two trusted people. Gives me something/one to focus on.

For me, crowds of strangers represent a higher likelihood that I will encounter an unforseen "bully." I still can't often pick them out before the fact. Especially worrisome is that, in such a situation, my escape routes might be cut off, as well. I don't get the same unease among friends and family members.

I am the same way in traffic, too. I don't like to be boxed in. Only there, I am not so concerned about bullies as reckless drivers. Driving in the rightmost lane makes me feel like I have more options to evade a collision.

I have the same problem. It's only been the last decade that I've come to understand that a having a safe person makes a world of difference.
I kept thinking I would be healed or outgrow this inexplicable barrier. My heart goes out to all here. Sensory problems are difficult to live with in this fast paced loud world.
