• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Does anyone else have a child with this diagnoses or know someone who does?

I am just curious about where the line is drawn between SI and mild autism.

Does anyone think that SI will eventually become another piece of the spectrum puzzle? It seems so similar.

Jane
No.

I know a little about this.

SI is something any one of us can have. You can be typical and have this, many children and adults do. What males the diagnoses difficult is those with neurological disorders, no matter which one- autism, ADHD, what ever, will more than likely have SI. This seems to go hand and hand with just about every neurological disorder there is, autism being the most obvious. Occupational Therapists are the ones who know about this, pediatricians are clueless. OT is what treats this, OT determine being either over stimulated or under. We all have this to a degree but where it actually becomes ‘SI’ is when we can not function normally due to it.

In relation to autism, finding out what sensory stimuli the child is sensitive to and having a good OT plan to address it can improve some of the behaviors. As with autism in general- trying to separate which ‘disorder’ ADD, SI etc is causing a certain behavior is tedious.

There is a great book called "The OUT of Sync Child" you can find it cheap at any chain book store that explains a lot about what this is and is not and how to deal with a child how has it.

It's common in Asperger's (my diagnosis), but not everyone on the spectrum has it, like Shelb5 said.
I know Aspies without sensory integration difficulties, but I hadn't thought of a neurotypical person having it
Hisrosebud, if you have specific questions...well, I'm not a parent yet, but I can give you answers from my perspective, or I can ask my mom if I don't know (she's Aspie-like and has raised two Aspies, so she's uniquely qualified :D).

Anyone here been treated as a teen or adult with Sensory Integration Therapy?

I scored high on an online test and do have spectrum problems like panic attacks, OCD & SAD. I did read where there are three disorders that mimic each other. Aspergers, Personality Disorder & Social Anxiety have silimiliar symptoms.
I have been to enough specialists to know they don't have the wisdom of God, but wondered what anyone knew about any of this....
