Which one is worse abortion or having children?

Having a child is in fact a very selfish act. We bring a human being into this world to appease our own desires and needs, without giving that person any say in the process.

Abortion deprives an unborn child of this transient life, but having a children and raising them to believe in the wrong god could sentence them to eternal suffering.

Ask yourself, do I want to have someone like me as my father/mother? If the answer is not a resounding yes, then you’d be committing a very selfish act by having children.

Interesting take. However, life is more than who your parents are. I'm somewhat torn on the abortion debate in all honesty, but I disagree with your view on birth in general. Certainly, we would not consider it immoral to save the life of an unconcious man based on him not asking to be saved. Nor would my own preferances if I was in the situation carry to what another may or may not want. Having a bad childhood should not lead to an assumption that the person would rather not live at all. Even if one person may feel that the years after 18 did not make up for the pain of those before, it would not lead to a general assumption that no one would.

People have children for different reasons other than that. But, the question is, are you saying that doing anything to appease our desires is selfish? And if the person were given a say in the matter, then they would already be alive and be deprived of making the choice of whether or not they want to live.

It's their choice to make and completely beyond the mother and father's control.

I'm kind of amazed, yet somewhat heartened, to read a post from someone who thinks similarly to the way I do about having children.

I think it's an extraordinarily selfish act as well. In fact I've never heard anyone give a reason for having a child that wasn't largely self-centered. (If someone can come up with one, I'm more than happy to hear it.)

Having kids is a choice, though. Even though I think it selfish, I can't say that it's the right or wrong decision to make in any given situation, and I can't make that decision for anybody else. It isn't my place.

Same with abortion. Is it always right? Always wrong? I don't know. I'm in favor of keeping it so that the choice is available to have a child or not, in any case.

No. It's selfish when another human being's life and fate is at stake.

To state the obvious, having children is an immense responsiblity. Who children become as adults is determined to a great degree by who their parents (or any other adult guardians) were and what they did and said. Even parents with the best intentions who do their best don't always succeed and their children could pay the price in this life, and based on what you might believe, in the next life.

And too many people are far from ready when they have children, but they do it anyway because they have to satisfy their own needs. That's were the selfishness comes from, that's why in many cases having children could be just as regretful as abortion, if not worse.

Well! That leaves me out.

But I don't think having a child is selfish, no. You can find a selfish reason for anything you might want to do, solely by saying you want to do it in the first place. That doesn't make it unethical.

Personally, I think there are selfish and unselfish reasons for both.. it all depends on the circumstances.

They are both generally, but not always, selfish in my opinion. Which is worse? If pressed into a corner and forced to make a choice I'd say abortion, but it's not like that's a strong opinion there. It's a close tie to the couple that is so set on having a biological child of their very own that they ignore many very wonderful children in orphanages to spend tons of money of fertility drugs/procedures or surrogacy.

Your comments reminded me of the cyberbeggars at BabyorBust.com. This couple is attempting to get people to donate $20,000 so they can do IVF. When asked why they didn't just adopt, their reply was: “We want a baby that has my blue eyes,” Brandi said, “and Shelton’s red hair and my curls.”

I wonder what happens if they do have their own child and it looks exactly opposite of what they're hoping for.

To me, that's the ultimate in selfishness when it comes to having children. The couples who go far out of their way, especially when they can't even afford it and have to resort to begging, just to have biological kids are immensely selfish.
